8,000-year-old rock carvings in Morocco destroyed by local Salafist Muslims.
"Atlas Stones" at an archeological site in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, created more than 8,000 years ago, have been destroyed Salafist Muslims, according to a report in AFP.
The stone carvings depict a Neolith religion that worshipped a sun god, and many of the 4- to 5-foot diameter carvings depicted the sun.
One of the carvings was made even before the Phoenicians arrived in Morocco.
Salafist Muslims have also been accused of burning down one of the major Sufi Muslim mausoleums in Tunisia.
Other ancient World Heritage shrines have been also destroyed by Islamists in nearby Mali.
