It is the home of the oldest operating lighthouse on the west coast, a Civil War fortress that served as the San Francisco Arsenal, the infamous federal prison, the beginning of the American Indian Red Power movement, and also a bird sanctuary. #FoundOnFieldTrip: The Castillo de San Marcos

Image
#FoundOnFieldTrip : The Castillo de San Marcos The oldest stone fort in the continental United States is located in St. Augustine, Florida. Originally constructed by the Spanish in the late 17th century, the stone Castillo de San Marcos replaced a previous wooden fortification. #FoundOnFieldTrip: Turning Torso

Image
#FoundOnFieldTrip : Turning Torso In 1999, Santiago Calatrava was invited to design a mixed-use residential tower for a prominent site in Malmö's Western Harbor area, near the Öresund Bridge, which connects Sweden and Denmark. Calatrava conceived of his project as a freestanding sculptural element posed within the cityscape. He based its form on one of his sculptures, Turning Torso, in which he abstracted the human form in movement as a stack of cubes elegantly positioned around a core. #FoundOnFieldTrip: Berkeley Castle

Image
#FoundOnFieldTrip : Berkeley Castle The Berkeley family has inhabited Berkeley Castle in England, originally built as a Norman Fortress, since the late 12th century. Guides bring the castle's history alive during visits to the Kings Gallery (where King Edward II was brutally murdered), the Tower Room, the Great Hall, formal rooms, domestic areas and more. You can even visit the Beer Cellar and catch the faint aroma of hops from the ancient beer barrels. Expect to see some stunning artwork, gleaming Georgian silver, beautiful porcelain, wonderful tapestries, fantastic armoury collections, Francis Drake's cabin chest, Queen Elizabeth I's bedspread and, of course, all the trappings of an old fashioned kitchen. You will also see features such as "trip steps" designed to make intruders fall during an assault, arrow slits and murder holes. See the original Field Trip card:  http://goo.gl/5Fq5lB

#FoundOnFieldTrip: The Home of the SF Giants

#FoundOnFieldTrip : The Home of the SF Giants With today's World Series game, between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals being played at AT&T Park, San Franciscans all over the city are embracing their local team with pride. What some may not know is that the true birthplace of the Giants is in Troy, NY.  When Troy resigned from the National League in 1882, most of its players went to the N.Y. Gothams, renamed The Giants in 1883 (because of the "very tall Troy players") and eventually moved to San Francisco in 1958. See the original Field Trip card:  http://goo.gl/2I5NdP

#FoundonFieldTrip: Kate Shelley High Bridge

Image
#FoundonFieldTrip : Kate Shelley High Bridge Iowa's Kate Shelley High Bridge is among the highest double-track railroad bridges in the United States, but that isn't what makes it notable. The story of how it got its name is one of heroics, adventure, and legend.  A violent thunderstorm washed-out the bridge timbers and sevent-year-old Kate crawled on her hands and knees across a 671-foot-long railroad bridge to save the midnight express and its 200 passengers from a tragic fate. #FoundOnFieldTrip Fort Lovrijenac (St Lawrence Fortress) is a stunning and imposing cliff-top fort located just outside Dubrovnik’s medieval city walls. Legend has it that Fort Lovrijenac was built in merely three months in the eleventh century by the people of the republic of Dubrovnik. At the time, the Venetians were intent on building their own fort in this location, but Dubrovnik’s citizens completed Fort Lovrijenac first, thus frustrating the Venetian plans for military superiority.
