Old Main was intended originally as a territorial reform school. Local residents lobbied to have the unfinished structure converted to a teacher-training school. The Northern Arizona Normal School was established in 1899. In 1920, an addition, including the Ashurst Auditorium, was made to the west side of Old Main. On July 1, 1925, the Northern Arizona Normal School became the Northern Arizona State Teachers College.
