Ingress Field Report: Operation Blue Carpet
Date: 27/02/2013

What started as a joke in January when agent sincebeta went on a holiday to Whyalla, quite quickly became the ambitious adventure that would one day be known as Operation Blue Carpet. We were set to to create a 2000 square km field that is 250 kms in length and 30+ kms in width spanning from Christies Beach to Hahndorf to Whyalla, covering the bulk of the city of Adelaide.

As a lone member of the Team Ghostbuster, sincebeta braved the element and the cemetery goers in the name of Ingress. He spent his spare time hacking the souls out of the cemetery farm until he obtained the set of portal keys required for us to make the field from Adelaide.

Keys eventually made it back to Adelaide but all along, right from the moment we joked about it, we knew we had the slight problem, we did not have enough L7+ agents required to make the simultaneous links. Hence, the operation went onto the backburner until few of the Resistance agents seasoned.

In the mean time, over the following couple of weeks Adelaide Enlightened faction recruited an eager bunch of agents that were extremely keen to play and before we knew it the Resistance started losing the total control of the State to the point that CBD may have been all green at some point recently.

Over those same couple of weeks, several Resistance agents matured to the seventh level and operation planning was back on the agenda. At this point we knew we could not overturn the colour of CBD portals overnight but instead we thought the easiest way of temporarily fixing the problem was to sweep the green portals under the blue carpet, hence the name of the operation, Blue Carpet.

After days of negotiations, we finally had the hardest part of the mission complete, finding a date and time when everyone is available. Apart from 2 deployment teams, Dyne Siamang at Christies Beach and Haematic Uromastyx at Hahdorf, we needed another team to deal with the blocking links originating at the Tea Tree Gully Library Portal. Team Torr Weasel was assigned that task.

Team Dyne Siamang: Deathriderau, Saito
Team Haematic Uromastyx: Happyping, MasterDarko, Uncanonical
Team Torr Weasel: Technyx, weetbixkid

By the end of the weekend on 24 February, everything was confirmed and the 3-day waiting game had begun.  Everything was going to plan with no friendly links being deployed to compromise the operation. That was until Tuesday night when Resistance bunyip STau decided to make a link from Murray Bridge to Police heritage Site portal in Upper Sturt. This link almost ended the operation as the link went north of the Hahndorf portals making the Hahndorf – Whyalla link impossible to create. We could not believe our luck as operation was to go ahead the following night.

Minutes later, literally, as we were conceding defeat and talking about cancelling the operation, something magical happened. Wiilderbeast, an Enlightened agent came through the Upper Sturt area and captured several portals and in turn destroyed the obstructing link at the Police Heritage Site portal. We could not believe our luck as those Upper Sturt portals often go untouched for weeks! I do not think Wiilderbeast still realises what exactly he did for us that night. Anyway, thank you Wiilderbeast once again.

We were back on track and thankfully from there everything went smoothly. At 2100 on the following night 2 deployment teams met in the CBD, collected the Whyalla portal keys and headed to their destination on 2 different sides of the town, Christies Beach and Hahndorf. Team Torr Weasel met at the Tea Tree Gully Library portal and waited for the deployment team to reach their destinations. With everyone in the position, just before 2200 the obstructing links at Tea Tree Gully were destroyed by Team Torr Weasel and at 2201 the largest field to this date in South Australia was created with mind unit count of +293,642. Mission accomplished, with 85-90% of State's portal carpeted!

For the record, the Blue Carpet lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes before Loki6969 the Enlightened Carpet Removalist got to it.

Also, we could not let this rare congregation of L7+ agents go to waste so we all went back to city where we were joined by CoolFish and FreyaKitten and created Adelaide’s first L7 portal farm under the cover of the Blue Carpet

Also, thank you those that were not mentioned here but had knowledge of the operation. We thank you all.
