L8 portals ...been there, done that...
Let us first set the stage here a bit. Hamburg is a very active Ingress playground. With more than 800 portals and roughly 500 players, you meet other players at basically every hot spot in the city (any time of the day :)). While feeling a bit too paranoid in the first weeks of Ingress when looking for other players at portals, this paranoia is now completely understandable. In addition, it became very difficult to keep large events a secret - both teams know the High-Level players of their enemy and their actions are tracked closely by either side. Portals with higher levels usually do not survive their first 12hrs - most of them don’t even last two hours (or, in case of enlightened L8-portals, are destroyed in the moment the last resonator is placed). And if you want to build something, you better be fast and stay in stealth mode as long as possible. Otherwise you don’t even get to hack them for a second time.
Since the first L8 portal in Hamburg has already been built by the enlightened a couple of weeks ago, we decided not to follow-up immediately. That race was lost and our congratulations went out to a well-organized team of enlightened L8 players.
In the meantime, all High-Level players of the Hamburg Resistance team focussed on community work, assisting Low-Level players with items and know-how as well as building up local groups in every part of the city. After several weeks of “green domination” in Hamburg our tactic was finally successful and balance was restored. With a whole lot of new agents rapidly advancing through the levels, it was about time to do what we were obliged to do.
Hence following our predestined path, after all, a L8 portal still needed to be built, so a fraction of the generally available L8-players agreed on a date. Although quite a couple of L8 players were unavailable on that date, the remaining L8 players insisted on that date to just get this done once and for all. The BigBams had quite a time seeing his offspring become a fully fledged combatant league on its own - no longer in need of his chocolate and care and having become so many that even such a simple task as agreeing on one date has become rather difficult. Of course some of the L7 players were thrilled by the expectation to see so many L8 on one spot building up the utopian fountain of reso- and xmp-mana they have only heard in heroic stories from counties far far away. In the end being able to recruit the needed amount of L8-players was easy enough and thanks to “Papa Smurf” (aka BigBams) we started the evening with drinks, Haribo smurfs and lots of cheerfulness. Everybody was eager to go out into the cold and wet Hamburgian night (4° celsius, 39° fahrenheit) and be part of history currently being written for the local team by their deeds. We split up in several cars, and headed out to some of the well-known hot spots and farming grounds in the city. Eight of the L8 players were equipped with dedicated resonator-deploy-assignments so the overall upgrade process would go fast and chances to fail due to double-deploys would be minimized. From our experience of previous events, this cautious behaviour seemed more than appropriate for this historical event, which was intended to go as smoothly as possible. Actually, we expected to be interrupted quickly but we managed to stay undercover for a pretty long time so we did not need to make use of “Plan B”... Our remote operators were not seeing too much activity on the Intel Map, either.
After all the portals at “Deichtorhallen” were burned out for everyone, we took a picture and continued our route to the next destination - the beautiful “Docklands” building located directly at the harbourfront. Lucky us were now well trained to apply the same proven stealth mode tactics and fast deployment moves, so hacking until all portals were burned was achieved within no time (which was quite fitting since the windchill was a little more challenging than expected) and the mission could be called “completed”.
Being totally at ease with our accomplishments so far, some smurfs just decided to build up another (unplanned) farm - just for the sake of having more L8 portals built than the greenish amphibions before us. The discussion about the right spot for this were interfered by some weaker smurfs complaining about hunger and (this is the author’s sole perception!) being a bit too boozed to apply the hard-drilled tactics another time without prior having rebuilt the fundament of not getting a hangover later.
To make a short story even shorter, after a drive of about 5min, we arrived at the picturesque Altona town hall which is surrounded by several portals within 4min walking distance. Having arrived there, it was totally obvious, that we were missing our commander and we got beaten by the naughty L8-monster-beta-hickups quite too often. However, after having struggled with these mere technical imperfections, everything was running smoothly again and we had those portals up on L8 as well.
But our glorious feelings were quite abrubtly disturbed by the appearance of a friendly, but froggy team member. He was the only one of our “competitors” that came out at that time to take down those portals. So after a couple of minutes (COMM-log has details about that for sure), some of our freshly built L8-portals were destroyed, leaving just three or four. However, we felt quite happy to be able to just redeploy L8 or L7 or whatever takes a couple of frog-owned-bursters out of our competitor’s items supply - at least we had made plenty plunderage and therefore we did not have to be cheap. But somehow even our offer of re-supplying him with some ammo out of our stock did not seem to cheer him up too much (he mumbled something about out of XM and blablafrogblabla ;) ) .
Rumour had it, that in that time our portals were the only L8 portals in the world. But still, the final challenge, the documentation of the event, laid ahead. We assembled most of the pictures and videos from last night. In the end up to 5 people were directly, synchronously contributing to this summarizing document - Google Docs/Drive made that possible :)

Also many thanks to all the ambitious frogs who keep us interested in this game! Please let us continue to stay respectful, friendly and most importantly: Let’s keep it fun!
We are very keen on testing out our preparations when the frogly counter-event takes place. So keep up the good work - we will always try to keep up the better one :-)
So, within the spirit of the game, we showed you ours, now it’s your turn to show us yours, or to put it crisp: What’s up next?
