FIELD REPORT – Here Stood the Eight House
Columbia, SC

Saturday fulfilled yet another Ingress dream for the Enlightened in SC – 22 Agents ranging from level 3 to 8 contributed to the creation and linking up of 58 Level 8 portals in Columbia, SC.

The day began with agents from all over SC, as well as parts of Georgia and North Carolina traveling to the capital city. After many agents met for breakfast, everyone gathered at the statue of George Washington on the State House grounds. This portal served as Columbia’s first level 7 portal a few months back, and would be our first level 8 as well.

(Promote then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened. - George Washington, Farewell address 1796)

Ably led by our “raid leader,” Media (Lucas Ruse) we started promptly at Noon, and created his “nerd herd” around the capitol grounds. With still-leveling agents taking portals ahead of the group and linking them up for AP, level 8 agents were assigned specific octets to capture or upgrade, and backup agents set to pick up any slack. We moved quickly and efficiently in creating our first 29 portals. We then moved at our own pace to farm all portals until they were burned out, meeting back at the Liberty Bell portal.

With more agents en route, Media slipped off to greet them and we headed to the University of South Carolina Horseshoe area, where we created another 9 portals. During this time a few portals gave us a head’s up that they were under attack, but it was purely secondary damage from another target nearby. After determining there was no direct threat, we left it alone and proceeded to farm.

A large crowd now, we met back at the state house to discuss the logistics of moving the crew to the State Museum area. A handful of people broke off for a quick bite to eat - more on them later - and the rest of the crew piled in the cars of locals and we were off for the next 11 portals.

It was during this that the first sign of danger appeared – a Resistance player was now directly attacking the state house. We wondered how the new XM costs would affect their success. 14 minutes after the first attack, the second came. We guessed roughly where the agent must have been standing and assumed his XM was zapped, and the 14 minute gap was the refill time. Again, feeling secure that we could remote recharge from our new location we continued to create and farm.

The final target was Memorial Park. A truly beautiful park, it contains 7 portals in roughly a 2-block area. We took it easy here, everyone now feeling the strain of several hours of walking in the South Carolina heat and humidity.

After Memorial Park, several folks needed to head back home. While we could have moved on to make more portals, the decision was ultimately made to farm the state house grounds once more instead, on the suspicion that the Resistance may have been organizing to take down our work.

The remaining agents refilled and recharged the damage that had been done by the Resistance lone wolf, and went to the Hunter Gatherer to celebrate with dinner and drinks. While traveling to the Hunter Gatherer, the dinner crew claimed one more portal nearby, bringing the total to 57.

I know several agents stayed up late that night, set alarms to farm again, and even spent the night in Columbia to grab one more farming session before heading back home. HelicopterCrash (Bryan Caulder), SerpentWithin (George Brown), Media (Lucas Ruse) and myself headed out late at night and set up a quick L7 farm in Lexington, SC to help round out our inventories. The night ended with the portal submission of a favorite local pub frequented by both the Enlightened and the Resistance, and a shot before heading home.

Now, about those agents who broke off for lunch – they noticed there was a portal nearby and deployed some 8s on it just to do it. And as people drove through town to farm, a few more dropped 8s too. Consequently a full 30 hours after everyone had gone home a local agent dropped a final 8 and created a 58th level 8 portal.

Our work stood solid for 44 hours before it began to slowly get dismantled by some dedicated Resistance agents.

A very deep and heartfelt thank you from Columbia to every agent that was with us, or with us in spirit. This was incredibly fun, a first for Columbia, a record number of Level 8 portals in South Carolina, and one hell of a team-building exercise.
