A Long Way South
A long but fun day out creating P8s, possibly the southern-most yet P8 Ingress portals in the world!
Over the past few weeks the New Zealand Resistance in the South Island had been getting close to 8 L8 players. The recent introduction of virii nearly scuttled our plans, but in the end we decided to go ahead and create P8s the 'traditional' way, as it was still going to be a fun day, and it was! In the end we had 9 L8s and one L7 from three cities - Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.
Sunday the 9th of June started early for many, with the Christchurch L8s on the road around 6am. We met at a notable historical geographic location where the 45th parallel south is marked - roughly halfway between the Equator and the South Pole. This appealed to the geogeeks amongst us, and the nearby town of Oamaru made an obvious central meeting point from our different home towns.
After taking one of a few cheesy photos, we headed into Oamaru for farming proper. We set up another 21 P8s and burnt them out - one we flipped to green to create the first EN P8 in the South Island. Pizza and beer for lunch, and then we managed to get another cycle on a couple of the larger clusters.
Oamaru is an interesting town, it has a lovely Victorian Historical District with plenty of heritage buildings, and as a result of this, it has also become the natural Steampunk capital of New Zealand. Strike it the right time of year and you'll see fascinating sights!
Some noteables:
o The first P8 farm in the South Island.
o The first Enlightened P8 in the South Island, created by JARVIS :)
o Possibly the most Southern P8 in the world to date - Great War Memorial for Deborah (https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=-45.098336,170.972586&z=14)
o Possibly the first South Island P8, although we have heard (but have seen no evidence) that there was a previous, very short-lived, one created by travelers in Christchurch. Definitely the first by local players.
All up, it was a long day, but the planning and fun were all worth it!
We'd also like to send out props to EN in Christchurch, who made the first Christchurch P8 farm last night, after flipping portals upgraded with our spoils from the weekend, and our freshly created pseudo-P8 (created as a Jarvis-ADA flip on one of our existing portals). Sounds like they had a great team evening too! I believe the new mod pass codes came at a perfect time for them to experiment with them!
