Preface.

"Wow-wow, we got a piece of an official event!" cheered Moscow Enlightened agents once details of «XM Anomaly: Operation Voynich, Hamburg» were published.
Despite being a remote location we'll participate in an official event and we still could give a helpful hand to save Carrie Campbell  . It has been more than a week before the event when local operation HQ was organized and brainstorm began.

First and obvious idea was "Hell lets cover the city with a field". Nor we did know any event rules; neither had any specific places beforehand, but according to analysis of previous events the idea itself looked viable.

All previous events were of different types, ranging from "Big field over event area is bad" through "there could be strategies which include big fields as well as strategies without them" and to "Well, the bigger - the better".

The only type of operation where big field doesn’t make any sense and actually counter-productive is that where we have to link two cities.  It was excluded almost immediately. Alas, we have event zones in the center of large metropolitan areas which makes linking almost impossible from center to suburbs, let alone long-range links with link amps! Well, that means that event will be about portal control. An only thing unclear was if we get points just for portals or as well for links.
In case of "just portals" field is good, in case of "links as well" controlled field provides an ability to plan attack, deploy and link as much as possible and prevent opponents from linking.  We wouldn't say a word about field above Moscow region boosting up enlightened morale to green skies.

Let it be, the field.  But since we will need every bit of firepower, every agent during the event, HQ put a strict requirement for the operation: "No local agent should be pulled off during event time".  That effectively means we have to coordinate with our neighbors, hopefully we got some link amps to share :D

Agents inye and Ilerien took a quick look over intel, scratched their heads and decided that TWO fields are twice better than one. Why? Cause there's twice as much green, that's why!

Chapter 1.

inye:
Outer field.
Intel situation was gruesome. There were many links around Moscow, too dense to make field suburbia-wide. We could clean up to ten locations to make it slightly possible but with no allusions that we'll succeed in the operation.  This is where "Zoom Out" button was used and planning started a bit wider.  As we were checking keys, the lucky bell rang once: Moscow L8 agent inVasion was going to Minsk at July 13 and was able to participate in linking from Belarus. Moments later we discovered that after "Green Sky Eastern Europe" operation agent DentonDS had few keys from Gryazovets which is nearby Vologda and days ago agent BlackFx came back to Moscow with a bunch of keys from the same location.  A sketch of the big field is coming up to reality as Voronezh Enlightened in face of agent twister1983 agreed to help us.

The drafts become solid on Monday.  We got all three key points: Slutsk 100km south from Minsk, Belarus, Zadonsk 100km north of Voronezh and Gryazovets 50km southeast of Vologda.  All links were possible and quite safe crosslink-wise.  Putting a cart before the horse, they remained clear till the actual linking occurred. One of links was running close to Yaroslavl, where green links to adjacent Kostroma and Ivanovo could ruin the plan, but agent DentonDS had in touch with local Enlightened crew to make sure that this is not going to happen.

Ilerien:
Inner field.
Northern point of the inner field was an easy hit: Dubna is very comfortable for linking both due to its location and local agents which participated more than once in ops of Moscow Enlightened.

Southeastern point of the inner field could be Ryazan, but we faced that it would interfere with outer field thus we moved this vertex to Lukhovitsy, actually nearby village Krasnaya Poyma (Red water-meadow) 15km away.

Southwestern vertex was most troublesome point due to high concentration of Resistance agents in the area and we had to change its location several times. Finally, as agent keshuny123 advised, a monument to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya at Minskoe highway near Dorokhovo was chosen.

inye:
Monday:  Met agent DentonDS, hacked him for some keys.
Tuesday: Agent dim2k from Vologda set up target portal in Gryazovets.
Wednesday: Met agent BlackFx for the remaining keys and transferred them to agent inVasion, whose trip to Minsk was due any day.
We had less than three days left for the event, neither have we had any rules nor were we sure that the field will be needed and useful at all. Anyway, it was too late to stop once we started.
Friday: We planned a flight to Voronezh for key transfer and, as well to burn out a nice L8G farm which occurred in the center of the city. An optional component was to sleep before the event in the return train.

Ilerien:
Tuesday:  Two-hours ride by suburban train, Kolomna here we go. Met agent skiend at Golutvin station, got keys of Krasnaya Poyma, and absently left my jacket in the train. Well, not a big price for 2.5m MU field, anyway.
Wednesday: A  beautiful and green in every respect science city of Dubna is actually a good place to move in, the only reason not to do so is cat-sized Enlightened-hungry mosquitos.
A key portal at Bolshaya Volga railway station produced four keys from twelve hacks, good stuff.  Agent Aeon23 got a key of Krasnaya Poyma as we met with him for an exchange.
Thursday: Left my workplace early to remove Resistance-owned field from Mitino interfering our plans. It's been two days until event starts when I realized that I'm quite low on stuff, thus Bulvar Dmitriya Donskogo permanent L8G 30-portal farm was a good place to meet agent keshuny123 from Obninsk for final key exchange.
Inner field linkage was embarrassing because of tons of city-suburbia links, especially at the western part which is beloved by Resistance for placing chaotic links and narrow fields. It has to be noted that among almost ten group of crosslinks only one of them belonged to the Enlightened, that means that our fellow agents seriously followed an advice not to link to suburbia before the event.

inye:
Friday morning we were reading (finally!) event rules as we rode to an airport Vnukovo. Neither had we got any points for the field, nor should event zones be linked between them. Also, 2pm GMT+4 was an abstract "starting time" and first measurement was going to happen an hour later at 3pm MSK.  This was followed by two requests from HQ: first of all, field must be established an hour later than initially planned and second, field must be ADA-removed right before last measurement to allow agents to link like crazy at the final zone.  Both requests seemed impossible, our team in Belarus was strictly limited by the time and once outer field is established, there were no field agents to use ADA three hours later.

We've landed in Voronezh. After a short dinner, I and smilenka went to a farm, bantering each other regarding the fact that two Moscow L8 agents took a flight to the city 500km away just to burn out some L8G farm and get back by the train. The loot was surprisingly good, we managed to get about 15 power cubes, it looks like drop percentages were slightly modified just before the event to encourage people to farm more stuff.  As we met agent twister1983 for a final key exchange, we realized that we were close enough to spend a night in Voronezh instead of train just because transit trains to Moscow stop at small station within the city ares as well as at the main railway station. That fact didn’t remain unnoticed, immense thanks to agent twister1983.  After 10km long sight-seeing walk we've arrived to the Pridacha station well before our train arrived.

Ilerien:
There were a bunch of objectives for Snegiri raid at the Friday, namely remove crosslinks to Shakhovskaya and Artemki, napalm L8R farm at the location and boost our fellow L7 agents with a nice bunch of APs.  Needless to say, we succeed at one hundred percent and as a bonus, stray kitten found his new home with a help from agents zvilcr0 and overskan. Yes, Enlightened care about kittens too!  Same day later, southern suburbia fields were successfully annihilated by agent Androsii1984 and agent kgam visited Khimki and removed one of remaining crosslinks.

inye:
Caturday, OP Voynich Day, 7:30AM.
Agents inye and smilenka, armed, dangerous and sleepy arrive to Moscow, Kazanskiy Railway station.  An hour later, last intel checks, outer field links will go smoothly, and there are few crosslinks for the inner field. A short break for a shower and breakfast and we move to our position at the small cafe near anomaly zone to coordinate field agents from intel.

Ilerien:
As I managed to open my eyes after a short sleep, I looked to the intel and sighed with a relief since there were only one new crosslink which was tied to portal at Putilkovo, a point already targeted for the clearance.  There was a chance that links to the west suburbia will be restored quite fast, since the zone in in Resistance control, but we've managed the situation by placing defensive link with help from agent MaRSe right after Putilkovo spot was cleared.

One-by-one, blue crosslinks were removed by agent keshuny123 as he was driving through southwestern suburbs of Moscow to his final target, link from Rusa to Borovsk which should defend inner field from blue crosslinks.

At the same time agent sem4 has finally managed to get to the portal in Gorky and removed last interfering green link with ADA refactor.  I jumped into a local bus heading Moscow from Putilkovo, hoping to get to the event zone asap.

inye:
Field agents are on their way to the key portals. I'm checking routes again. Outer: all routes are clear. Inner: almost all routes are clear, and the last spot will be cleared by Ilerien himself.  Also, surprisingly good news for the whole operation: first of all, our team in Belarus is able to wait an extra hour before starting. And second is that our beloved agent Greeska is in Minsk today (what a surprise) and is able to get to Slutsk for Plan B and remove field with ADA when necessary!  As we had to shift operation for an hour I'm starting to concord all parties involved. Almost everyone is not satisfied with this change, but with a bit of grumble everyone accepts the new plan.  Thanks everyone involved once again!

Meanwhile in suburbia final craplinks are removed by Ilerien, who's now heading to anomaly zone.  All routes are clear, all routes are clear and due to the shift in operation start they must remain in the same state for an extra hour, filled with suspense since we won't be able to change anything as there are no agents who will be able to remove crosslinks if they occur.  Furthermore, the portal in Slutsk is spoiled already as well as clearance by agent keshuny123 which won’t remain unnoticed for a long time. The risks are somewhat mitigated by the fact that outer routes could be prevented only by long intercity links and as for inner, our defensive green links are already up.
I'm asking agents in Slutsk to remove link amps from the portal to minimize the chance of being noticed.
That was an oppressive hour of waiting and constant routes checking.

While waiting, I'm setting up my handset and join to operation Zello channel. Once there, I report to the HQ that we're ready and clear for action.
Ground zero in ten.  HQ commands "link everything that moves in all four event areas, and if it isn’t moving, shake it and link afterwards"
Ground zero in five. All inner field keys are checked. All inner field routes are clear. "Let's go" for the inner field, final check of the outer field keys.
With a tad delay from Dubna, inner field is enclosed and glows green with 2.5M MU!

Ground zero. First Measurement. "Enlightened, we've got the sky!" yells HQ in Zello channel right when links for the outer field are being placed and the second field is up.
"Enlightened, we got extra 11 million MU for the cause, go and fight!"

[few chats are omitted; raw emotions are hard to translate, especially with a bit of strong language  ]

Many thanks to all field agents, I'm doing all necessary screenshots, asking agents Greeska and Aeon23 about when and how we'll contact them in case of field removal, turning my scanner on and leaving the cafe under cozy green skies to join Enlightened forces to win the battle for this anomaly.

Raw facts, besides tons of fun.

It was the first time when we covered Moscow (twice!) using only neighbor agents. Only three Moscow agents participating in operation Voynich didn't make it to the first Measurement.  Out operation allowed  agents from Belarus to directly participate in Operation Voynich even when they were not chosen as a remote location.
Probably it was the first time when link amps were effectively used at west side of Ural mountains. Completed two fields for 11M MU total. Increased team spirit. Quoting agent kaytame, a field commander of Team3 "Look at those happy faces and eyes glowing with an insight once they realize the true size of the operation"
The timing was brilliant and coordination allowed us to link as much as possible and then secure our advantage with the field.

Thanks once again, everyone participated. Guys, you made it possible, it was fun. I hope that we'll meet at our next operations.

Coda. (with a grain of bitter)

I would be happy to write "And just before the last measurement we removed the fields with ADAs and that's all I have to say about that and smurfs and frogs lived happily thereafter", but unfortunately that's not the case.

Both fields lasted for a few hours and were destroyed during the event by Resistance agent aquintall, who apparently used coordinates spoofing.
Actually he didn't interfere with plans of Enlightened but only ashamed his own faction by his act of cheating.

All times are MSK (GMT+4)

14:50 Moscow, Event Zone 3.
The portal in question is: www.ingress.com/intel?ll=55.75965,37.620192&z=17&pll=55.75965,37.620192

15:53 Gryazovets, northern vertex of the outer field.
The portal in question is: www.ingress.com/intel?ll=58.88,40.232883&z=17&pll=58.88,40.232883

16:47 Dubna, northern vertex of the inner field.
Portal in question: www.ingress.com/intel?ll=56.725514,37.141171&z=17&pll=56.725514,37.141171

So, here's a sum of aquintall's moves.
On average, the guy manages to get about 300km/h to complete the mission.

Later, he admitted that he's bored with ingress and was caring about his faction since he was thinking they're starting to lose interest during event time since they're unable to link.

We've discussed this incident at cross-faction Moscow high level community which resulted in a mass report.

Thanks Niantic Project  Anne Beuttenmüller  Brandon Badger   Joe Philley for making this operation happen.

Regards,
Moscow Enlightened community.
