Cross-faction Farm - Christchurch, New Zealand
Victoria Square in Christchurch, New Zealand, has been the centre of Ingress activity for about the past 8 months as it became the densest concentration of portals in the city. This city may ring some bells, as it has been in the news since September 4, 2010, with the Canterbury Earthquake sequence that included the 22 February 2011 earthquake that killed 185 people.
VS as it is locally referred to, has gradually grown in portals, and also access as cordons related to post-earthquake building demolitions are gradually contracted.
Just over a week ago, a building unexpectedly 'pancaked' and collapsed on itself whilst undergoing demolition. There were no injuries thankfully. The video in the below article is taken from Victoria Square, and you can briefly see an ex-portal, as well as one of the existing portals - Bowker Fountain - when the camera pans to the left. Sadly, this has resulted in the contraction of Victoria Square again, and two previously accessible portals are just out of reach of the expanded cordon again.

We have had up to 21 portals in a very dense area, and they have been hotly contested by both factions. We had previously discussed creating a cross-faction farm to try to cool some temperatures down in the past, but that was not successful at the time due to a lack of agreement.
As a result of the new cordons, we had come to realisation that all the portals needed Common Heat Sinks on them, as the loop had effectively been shortened from a perfect 5 minutes, down to about 4 minutes. Of course if you're going to do that, and having lost 4 portals through 'Edit Location' requests, naturally you start thinking about adding Common Multi Hacks to compensate. A new, low-level Resistance player had just today applied a Very Rare Heat Sink to one of the portals, so next up was maxing-out a couple of the portals in the middle.
It didn't take long for the previous concept of a cross-faction farm to come out, and the 1 EN8 and 5 RE8s on site quickly came up with what we hope(d) will be an agreeable plan.
We started 'fixing' a couple of portals by neutralising them, and the remainder we upgraded to a set plan. We set up all the mods, and set up a mixture of 15 P7.5s and P7.625s in Blue. I then JARVIS'd eight of them, and, after having told another EN8 what was going on, he came down, and we were able to continue adding resonators to the farm. Later this evening, another EN8 came in and upgraded the rest of the Green portals including a couple with viruses to upgrade them to full P8s. With a few RE8s out of town or unavailable this weekend, they will be upgraded over the next few days. It is providing a nice mixture of hacks currently.
Overall, I think those of us that have built it and farmed it have really enjoyed the result. Whilst XM is an issue, the mixture of Blue and Green farming portals does seem to be working out pretty well. Yes, we do run the risk of tourists and lone wolves tearing it down, but those of us that have implemented it, are certainly prepared to give it a go and maintain and replace if needed.
Personally, it has been quite satisfying to pull this together at short notice and make it happen. I think this has been the best use I've made of the JARVIS Viruses I've hacked, and I am keen to apply more like this in future. Personally I'd already got both and ADA and JARVIS back from the farm today in two burnout sessions, and I know at least one more JARVIS was hacked there today as well.
It's quite cool creating true cross-faction portals with L8s from both sides, and equipment from both sides. Next time I'd like to do them all true cross faction style - 4x EN build to P7.5, EN use ADA to flip to Blue, 4x RE upgrade to P8, RE apply shields and farming mods. And of course vice verse for the other half of the portals. We didn't quite have the L8 availability today to do that.
Doing it this way means each faction is able to use their 'lesser' virus, which is often otherwise used only for what we term 'shits-and-giggles' :) More importantly, this half-and-half approach means we all have 'skin in the game' with an investment of some form or another in every portal, no matter the colour.
With Spring in full swing, and Summer nearly upon us, we're hopeful that Victoria Square in Christchurch will last as a fun and relaxed cross-faction farm for some time, and remain neutral ground for socialising.
Here's to warm days, and plenty of Green Grass and Blue Skies!
Portal Mix
o 15 portals – 8 EN, 7 RE (with a couple that are borderline inaccessible so weren't included)
o all with 2x Shields (mostly Very Rare to prevent splash damage from attacks elsewhere in town)
o 13 set up with a Common Heat Sinks and Multi-Hacks
o 2 set up with Very Rare Heat Sinks and Multi-Hacks
o both factions linked up internally for additional defence mitigation against splash damage from outside the farm
o looking at creating a cross faction 'link fence' border to prevent linking to/from the portals
Founders
EN - Caerwys89, TheARCHITECT, TwistedDemon
RE - elm0, ErniePI, hexagontime, nightwlf, rediguana, 3x To Be Determined ;)
Equipment
And a brief shoutout to all those that provided the cool kit - all the mods, and the initial JARVIS'ing of the eight portals to Green were with kit provided by the Resistance. Some later resonator upgrades to make P8s were made possible by the Enlightened using viruses as well.

Anjelica Timms This is to encourage moar boom boom, not less :)
ReplyDeleteJoe Philley Glad you enjoyed it Joe. Hope you get a chance, or rather make the opportunity, to come visit sometime. If you come sonar rather than later you'll be able to appreciate the extent of destruction more, before too many buildings are rebuilt.
