By now, you have undoubtedly seen many amazing SITREPs from around the world on #Unight8 and #U8Completed . This is a humble report on what happened in field in Sri Lanka for Unight8.
Back in August, 22nd to be specific, agent @phoenixsvj from Resistance India contacted our top agent @thinir, regarding a collaboration. We we preparing for what was then our largest in-country op undertaking (almost 70 million MUs)[1]. Agent @phoenixsvj knew agent @thinir from his visits here and asked if @thinir could be the country coordinator for a global operation called "Unight8".
Agent @thinir was initially somewhat concerned that he lived a couple of hundred kilometers away from Colombo, the financial and Ingress capital of Sri Lanka. But he agreed after the nature of the operation was explained. Then, he was actually concerned.
Prepping
By the time @thinir was briefed by Unight8 Indian coordinator, agent @illidan, we had a grand total of two L8 agents in the country. But the good news was, most of our active agents were either L6 or L7. So we had time to level up before the big day. We were aware that this was going to a big op, but we really didn't notice how enormous it was.
Fast forward a couple of months. Sri Lankan Resistance had grown to 10 L8 agents strong with additional L7s and L6s. Since we get visited by Maldivian Resistance agents frequently, and since our agent @Yajith had been there before, key exchanges and link coordination with Male wasn't a problem. In fact, we had done it several times before. This time around, agent @estrul1an of the Maldivian Resistance helped us with key exchange. We had previously linked to India as well, but it was trickier to do key exchanges with India. Luckily,@phoenixsvj had keys to several of west coast portals including the main portal for this op; WTC (World Trade Center twin towers).
Hiccups
Since the operation had a fixed date, we knew there would be niggles that we wouldn't be able to avoid. Little did we know that one such would be the Commonwealth. More specifically, Sri Lanka was hosting Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) this year. It was in full flow during the weekend. Having many heads of governments and delegations moving around meant tight security, sudden road closures and some areas being downright off-limits.
And when 16 November arrived, 4 of our L8 agents were unavailable owing to unavoidable personal reasons, ranging from the far ends of human emotional spectrum. Which meant we were two L8 agents short to make P8s. That was going to be a problem. Well, one of those.
Op Day
Our #Unight8LK team started by creating as much L7 portals possible. Luckily, couple of those previously unavailable L8 agents joined them when the party arrived at downtown Colombo. With the new boost, they started creating L8 portals. The final count of P8s were 24 for the day. Not bad.
Around 11.01UTC was the link establishing time. Our part for the links from India was to clear the path and have WTC portal ready. Two links between Sri Lanka and Maldives were up. Mumbai-Colombo link was also made successfully. Resistance LK agents were awaiting the second Indian link from Chennai. But nothing was happening. Then @illidan broke the bad news.
Some 30km north from Colombo, a link was blocking the Chennai-Colombo link. There was no time to lose. The greens now had our attention and were already moving pieces to thwart any plan we could have. They even dispatched an agent to Jarvis our main portal or to take it down. The task turned out to be above his pay grade and we ultimately prevailed.
While this was taking place, 3 of our L8 agents;@thinir and the Mr. & Mrs. MBH (@Yajith and @hansakinkini) had jumped in a car and heading towards Ja Ela. The defense and protection of WTC portal was left in the capable hands of agent @Deenster. With the trio clearing the blocking link and the other team at WTC protecting it, the link from India was established. The primary objectives of Resistance LK for the Operation: Unight8 were achieved. The South Asia was now under the protection of massive, beautiful ocean blue control fields.
Our agents @exit80, @arshadsl and @hogsmate did some additional #nightstalker action later to make sure most of the leftover greens were cleared. All in all, it was a great experience being part of a global operation of this magnitude. For the agents on fields it was a day of intense action, thrills and running on adrenaline. And to see the intel map turn to blue and Resistance hitting 1 billion MU count was something to remember. The utter shock among the worldwide Enlightened was the icing on the cake.
Unight8 was the largest player-organized operation in Ingress history. A token of gratitude for the way of life we now call "Ingress". And we are the Resistance.
