Two sitrep reports from agents in the field.
Agent superjase (Paarl):
We had a great road trip in the pouring rain across the mountains to Worcester to remove blocking links and then back to paarl.
The Grahamstown - Port Shepstone - Paarl field went up, but there was a TINY link in the middle of nowhere between Delmas and Springs blocking the larger field's creation. Some agents were scrambled to take it down, which they did.
Unfortunately the two hour delay meant that our presence in Paarl. Had been noted and our anchor portal came under attack; thanks to some awful reception we failed to keep the links up that were coming in. We must have deployed about 50 resos between us but our anchor portal fell.
We moved to a different anchor. Excellent preplanning meant the other anchors all had backup portal keys as well. We got the fields up but came under attack again. This time mrsdroplet and i managed to keep the portal up, and even got VR shields and force amps up as the LAs broke. Then the frogs jarvissed and it was over.
Agent Krow (Lephalale):
The day had come, one we had been waiting months for... Unight8 was upon us and we needed to do our part. Only one problem... A giant set of enlightened fields covering the whole country. But we did not give up hope. Within a few hours, enough of the fields were removed to allow our events to carry on, and so we did.
We started on the evening of Friday, 15th November. A low level event to serve two purposes... helping them level up and clearing the way of enlightened portals so as to create less "noise" on the scanners when our NightStalker event moved through the cities. After 4 hours, we moved onto the L8 event whereby three teams in two cities tried to make as many Level 8 portals as possible. In our province, we managed to create 192 level 8 portals.
But the best was yet to come. Having not slept, four of us leapt into a car and made a 3 hour journey to a tiny little town called Lephalale. We had done a cursory glance at the linkability and everything looked good. But another thorn in our side appeared when a new enlightened field was established over a key area. And thus it was, the calvary was called... Two brothers, Mikroft (Jaco Roetz) and Echos4 who had also just arrived home from the NightStalker event. They sped off to one anchor point while we, fortunately, headed through another anchor point on our way to our destination.
Upon arriving in Lephalale (and finding it to be 40 degrees celcius), we quickly set up the portal to link from, only to find that we could not make the link. We had agents searching intel for the problem, and eventually found that there were three small links, running parallel and on top of each other from both of the factions. Again, we called the brothers and everyone else nearby explained the situation... with the closest people being an hour away. Luckily the brothers and Agent Tazz76 (Wikus Esterhuizen) could get to key points and neutralize the blocking links. Thus it was we tried again to create the link from Lephalale to Port Shepstone, but to no avail. No one could see what the problem was, but after searching intel, eventually we found a link that was approximately 1km long, and perfectly in the way of our attempts. Frayed nerves, tense shoulders and hours of nailbiting... gave way to relief as the link went up.
As the fields went up, they came down again. Toads had found their way to the Paarl anchor portal. We tried several times to create the fields, to the point that our Port Shepstone team had run out of keys for the Paarl portal. Checking our inventory for keys we both had, from field creations four months before, we found a portal a few blocks north that was available and we linked to it. We had planned to create a nested field, but in between all the waiting, a low level Resistance player from a small town in a remote area, happened to create a blocking link at the last moment. Regardless of this, we managed to put together 6 fields with the center being a four layered area.
Close on 40 hours of no sleep and hundreds of kilometers travelled by several agents, we did it. At the end of the day, we managed to work around the issues that arose and implement the fields to allow South Africa to add their vote of support to the global Resistance effort for Unight8.
Thank you to all involved!
