Operation: WE SHALL OVERCOME Sitrep

It’s no secret that I have had a personal fear of setting up big fields (anything beyond visual distance within my scanner) especially within a historic city as densely populated as Washington, DC. However, thanks to the inspiration from some friends visiting from out of town, the teachings of the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. whose birthday was celebrated extensively this weekend and the incredible support from my amazing teammates, we created a field within the District of Columbia to honor Dr. King.

Anchors:

- Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial (mind)
- President Lincoln’s Cottage (body)
- Our Lady of Perpetual Help (spirit)

Shouts-out, big ups and big bear hugs to my remarkable teammates without whom, this could not have happened:

- CloudbreakerRD
- DarqAnshin
- daveidfx
- drknexus
- james7313
- Kiamat
- MissParker
- Mynja
- nano5th
- RedCider
- scratchscratch
- SecretAgentGrrl
- SgnfyngMnky
- Tenthman

Those who are aware of my non-Ingress work know my passion for Civil Rights and even worked toward the erecting of the memorial which resulted in receiving an award on behalf of my former employer at the MLK Memorial Dream Gala after its dedication.

To say we faced some obstacles is an understatement, but while gathering keys at the memorial early in the morning, I took a moment for reflection when a gentleman stood by me and started talking about not only Dr. King went through, but the country as a whole to get to where we are today. He brought his children from South Carolina for this special day and ceremony so that they would be reminded of what things were like back then. He was an 8-year-old boy growing up in Memphis, TN, and was just a couple of blocks from the motel when Dr. King got shot. He shared what he witnessed and a couple of more stories that brought me back to perspective. Any and every setback we faced throughout the day, while annoying to say the least, was nowhere near as significant, and I knew that we could overcome.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
