Participating in an Anomaly, is like opening a pack of peanuts.
Once you’ve had one, you just can’t stop, you want more.
The adrenalin rush, the smell of victory, the swags, the team spirit and the after parties…it’s all too addictive!

So, after participating at the Brussels Recursion and Interitus Amsterdam, it was clear that a Belgian team would go to London.
As soon as the decision is made, you are invited to a dedicated HangOut. It’s like a playground, meeting the same player again and again, even if they are at 1000 miles away from you. As we say in Belgium, once you are in an anomaly HO, you are in, no stepping back!

Personally, after being part of the Brussel’s Recursion orgas, I followed the A’dam anomaly on Zello from Belgium and on Hangout, just enough to make my decision to go to London.

Here is the story of the Belgian Adventure in London.

The Belgian team forms fast. Our national coordinators caroline Bora-Choain  and Aymeric Doridam ask me to be the team leader. I’ve done the job on Bxl Recursion, so why not in London? And after all, this will be just like a family reunion with a bit of preparation. And I have a fantastic co team leader.
Two weeks of preparation, strategy discussion and recruitment and our team HO is now completely trolled (which is a good sign). We have a great time on the main HO for the international mercenaries. I really want a battle cry to cheer up the team and we have it in a second – FUHA, for Fu***d Up Hangout Agents. The day after, the zippers are designed by Natacha Babette   and ordered.

The D day has finally come, I feel like a school boy going on a school trip for a week with his classmates.

25/04/14 9pm

Arrived at London St Pancras, we head right to our guest house. We drop off our stuff and go meet the lovely orgas Vicki Ellen  , Melanie Denyer   and our nice nav Nicholas Cornish   for the briefing and just in time for the last drink!
Back to our guest house, we enjoy a private family reunion in our extra small dormitory – smurf’s house for real. As a team leader it is my mission to make sure that everyone has a good night with sweet dreams. What a better idea than a smurf tail on youtube, too bad that I forgot a children’s story book.

26/04/14

Arrived in Hyde Park at 11a.m for the Niantic Project   meeting and meet all the international players we met in Brussels and A’dam.
After a few minutes, 3 Belgian flags are waving, no doubt about it - the #FUHA   team is here, ready to fight, in our battle suits. Skull on the back, agent’s name on the chest.
A group picture is taken followed by a picture with our team and Susanna Moyer  , we feel like the day is already won!

Noon is approaching, impatient to get our task, I listen to each word said by our op.
“Volatile teams are… team 9, team 10…”
My heart skips a beat, and my jaw drops, Volatile? We don’t even live in London and we have to run across the city?
My Co TL sees my look, apparently I look terrified. This is bad, but the team doesn’t need to be terrified. So, it’s time to get focused on the job, because the volatile just have been announced.

First Volatile : London | Westminister | Belgrave.
First of all, we need to leave Hyde park. Our nav finds the quickest way to the portal and then we run like hell for 30 minutes. I hear on zello that team 10, leading by Gilles WEBER,  is in the same situation, we both warned the op that the portal is too far away from us.
This is the moment when your motivation meets the reality of expectation - shall we really leave our first volatile portal to the enemy just because “it’s too far away from us”?

No way!

The team is splits. The fastest agents catch up with a part of the french team on the portal.
In 2 minutes, the measurement window will be open, and we’ve just arrived on site to help team 10 .
We manage to turn the portal blue and by the time the measurement window closes, the portal is blue all over the time.

The rest of the team catches up with us, there is no time to rest - the second volatile has just been announced.
We understand now what the rest of the day will look like.

Second Volatile : Red Telephone Box.
We leave asap for the second volatile and we wish luck to the French team. We just fought together to keep a volatile blue, it creates a connection with them.

We are the first on the portal, it looks like we will be on defense. The enemy arrives and the battle begins. Deployers and attackers are on their spot, a few checks on the positions and inventories. At 2.05 pm the measurement window is closed and we manage to keep the portal blue.

Third Volatile : Dancing Couple Statue.
We are on the spot at T-30, after mounting the volatile, we sit on the ground to get some rest while we are waiting for the enemy. They show up after 5 minutes.
One of them comes to us and tries to provoke us; a simple look is enough to show that we will not respond to that. Anyway, what a better answer than a blue portal all along the measurement window, it never even becomes grey.
The third volatile is won; wings are growing on our back.
Good thing too because the last volatile is announced and we will need to walk 90min to get to the place.

Fourth Volatile: Francis, Duke of Bedford
Luckily for us, we have an awesome nav. We take the tube and we run when we can.
I’m just hoping that I’ll miss nothing vital on zello while we are underground.

T-15: Arrival at the volatile  and obviously we are not alone. In fact, we are totally outnumbered, by five or six people at least.
We set the team to face that kind of situation and I ask reinforcement on zello, but the portal is too far away from the clusters and from the other teams. I understand that we will be on our own on this one, and that it will be a hell of a fight.

That is the last one, the last fight of the day.
“Measurement window is now open” says quietly our op, her quietness on zello is a big contrast with the situation and that helps a lot to keep cold blood.

We fire every single xmp’s into that huge green horror, shields are flying one after the other, but the enemy manages to replace those instantly, resonators are blowing every second…to be replaced by a fresh one.
Cube after cube, our scanner is literally flooded by explosions, sometimes the portal is grey, to be green just after…grey…green .

T+3min: Like the situation could not have been worse…a lag makes its entrance on the scene, a dozen of xmp’s are stacked, a maelström of  Xm is flying around our markers, but the xmp’s doesn’t want to fire anymore. Every agent of our team has the same problem. We quickly reset the connection, the problem stays.

“The measurement window is now over”.

The portal was green most of the time, it’s surely a defeat but we managed to save 3 portals over 4, that’s something to be proud of anyway!
Here is the final result for our 4 volatiles:

Resistance - (VOLATILE) - London | Westminister | Belgrave.

Resistance - (VOLATILE) - Red Telephone Box.

Resistance - (VOLATILE) - Dancing Couple Statue.

Neutral - (VOLATILE) - Francis, Duke of Bedford.

Unbelievable, the measurement was taken on the fourth volatile while it was grey and let’s face it, without that luck the portal could have been green.
The lesson was learnt - as bad and hopeless a situation can be on the battlefield, keep fighting, no matter what.

#FUHA !

Special thanks to
-the BXL RES community, we drained a part of our resources for London, and let Brussels a little bit greener, for a few days.
