Excellent article on the origin and intent of the #lllllegion #barcode movement.

Excellent article on the origin and intent of the #lllllegion   #barcode  movement. Check out the comment on the article for some different perspectives. I know many of the DFW barcodes, and every one that I know is a stand-up member of their team and the Ingress community - but I guess there will always be people that abuse an obfuscation system, no matter the intent behind it...

  2. I'm just not sold that the bar codes are some terrible cancer. I actually think that if we knew less about individual agents' actions, the game would be more civil.

  3. We have had our own barcode crew locally. Only one of them is still a barcode and a legit player. Some have changed back, some have quit, some have "disappeared". Once the idea was put forward by some locals in early 2013 and a few of them started switching it quickly became a platform for cheaters to use to hide their presence and multiple accounts. It was put forth innocently enough as a way to obfuscate and confuse the enemy but the warning was also immediately put forward that it would confuse the friendly as well and possibly cause those who play legitimately as a barcode to be confused with the cheaters that hide behind barcodes. That it did. Maybe with sufficient participation from legitimate players it would have produced the desired result with less collateral damage.

  4. David Timothy we have the same issues here in the dfw area, confusion from friendly and enemy sides plus cheaters hiding behind the barcode. But on a side note, it has gone from team work with the barcodes to a level of this egomaniacs trying to convert everyone and to force their ideals on the community. It is no longer a team based idea but a bandwagon that everyone jumps on.

  5. William Hasley The exact same can be said of you. You are an egomaniac that tries to convert everyone to "Team Pin" and force your ideals on the community. I hit L8 tonight without a single word from you despite your impish claim to "Lead" my area. You not only didn't help me hit e8, which I did in 4 days, but you tried to keep me from doing so by attempting to band agents against me in a selfish rant and called me outlandish things in a group area hangout. You are the perfect example of a useless agent in my eyes. Amazingly, the barcodes I never even knew helped me in Keller more than you, the agent whose farm I just fielded tonight. By myself. Your pitiful excuse for leadership disgusts me and my feelings will never change. Teamwork isn't in your vocabulary, and I wish to not play alongside you again.

  15. In my Experience  Barcodes across MANY  platforms of are used by  people who wish to obscure their identity, which the article covers. Most times it is for reasons of less then  legitimate play style.

Barcoding is a great way  to  cheat because it makes reporting the player/agent a LOT harder to do.  This is a tactic as old as Multi player games it self. Though they  can claim that they would run out cheaters the fact of the matter is ANYONE  can become a barcode. As such it encourages cheating because if there are 50+ agents its really easy  to make a barcode name and spoof fields because its requires someone to  go out of their way to  prove it wasnt the same account where a normal agent name like mine @Nydirech on 3 portals is easy  to tell if its suspect. Further more  the tactic has been used in many  Multi player games  because, no offence to  devs,  but they get tired of trying to  dig through  data looking for which barcode  id belongs to whom and it facilitates the cheating.

That is WHY  barcoders get such a bad rep. While the agents in the core sect of barcoders may be legit they are helping to facilitate those that may not be  as morally  sound as they.

  16. I know of two Enl dfw players who were cheaters.

One refused to join Barcode (before he was found to be a cheat), the other left the Barcodes and began cheating months after his departure. It should be noted that both players are persona non grata not only to me but also most of the team.

It really is a shared identity, and the standards for behavior are high.
