Tuesday morning, my Hangouts lit up. "How would austin like to help win Interitus for us?", Brandon Downey asked. Hmm. Something was up.
The next 5 days were made of equal parts insane and awesome.
After a lot of discussion about how to best handle things, we decided to get as many Robert E. Howard Museum keys as possible from Cross Plains, TX, to Austin, TX, and draw a #jeweleddagger pointing northwest on Intel. Friday night, many of us converged on that little museum in John Hanke's home town like a barbarian horde, ready to extract as many keys as possible. With three very rare multihacks and many keys being dropped by those who were staying there to guard the portal, I personally left with 53 keys, and in all somewhere in the neighborhood of 300-400 keys were on their way back to Austin.
But where should we link from? Keeping 360 degrees open around that portal would certainly be difficult. Looking at the map of the Austin city limits, we instead chose a wedge about 2 degrees wide to open up. Once it was open, we figured, we could just keep moving through the wedge, linking every portal in our path. Even better, a Resistance farm occupied much of the northwest corner of the wedge, making our link-clearing op look like we were just doing our usual farm-smashing.
Saturday morning, it all began… and then, disaster. Despite our efforts to hold the door open outside Austin, a link came in from outside Killeen. Fortunately, Morgan Self (@binarybishop) was standing by, and headed to take it out while we got into position. At 12:24pm CDT, Morgan opened the door, and the first wave of links left Austin for Cross Plains, carrying with them the memories of Hank Johnson that had been patterned during his time at the University of Texas and on his recent visit to the city.
Meanwhile, the Cross Plains team did an amazing job, holding the portal almost the entire time (except when we had to flip it to immunize it from surprise flipcards). Thanks to Mom Hanke for keeping the team hydrated, and for taking care of the museum!
Agents from all over the country worked together to link more than 122 portals from Austin, TX, to the Robert E. Howard Museum in Cross Plains, TX. 102 of those links were accepted by the official ruling. This scored 2040 points for the Enlightened, and helped to ensure that Hank will still be Hank after his Recursion.
Despite the extremely short notice, many agents made this mission a success. I apologize if I miss anybody!
