#Spinnaker2 Iceland Sitrep
TL DR - A 36.6 million MU vrla field which covered the entire UK and Ireland, with additional field to Azores. Our part of a 1.7 billion mu operation. And Iceland is amazing, you should go. Enjoy the pretty vid.
The planning
I've known Gilles WEBER for some time. At first I was slightly in awe of him. This resistance hero, with huge ap! Over time we became great friends, supporting each other beyond this unusual "game". During various shard and cell score events, #o2j and other operations I was continually impressed with his inspirational style, capacity to juggle huge operations, and underlying skill. When he started planning #spinnaker2 I knew I had to be involved. Would this be a good time to use my vrla, and surprise players in the UK?
The op was planned as an idea, and keys swapped through the efficient network of resistance couriers. I only realised I was definitely able go to Iceland last minute. Enlightened artifact links between Vadso and the Orkneys became an issue, we looked for agents to step up and take care of it. A huge ask. Valerie Wallace Craig Wallace and James Hunt fancied an adventure and made an epic journey to take the Enlightened home portal down. Erna Joensen and Bjørn Andersen created a fantastic block to Faroe at the perfect moment, preventing further enlightened interference in the area.
Iceland is somewhere I had always wanted to visit, and it didn't failed to impress. Highlights of the trip as follows
Hacking the airport portal from #Unight8 aka "Keflavík spoon" where Edda Ósk received the link around the world
Standing on a bridge between two tectonic plates in an ash covered moonscape
Climbing a hill to find an amazing lighthouse, which must have been the windiest spot on earth
Viewing the city of Reykjavik's amazing church and viewing the city from the tower.
Hacking every damn portal in town without attacking a single thing, walking 17 miles in the process
A shop full of puffin merchandise for Lucy Shires
Many more isolated lighthouses with extraordinary deserted beaches to explore
Being scared of a lifesize Auk sculpture that looked like the real thing on the cliff against the rain and raging Atlantic sea
Meeting lots of friendly Icelandic ponies
The weather - blazing sun to freezing rain in five minutes flat. The wind was a challenge when driving my original rental car, upgraded to something heavier after the op for thrashing around the gravel roads without drifting about
Eating lots of dried cod with butter
The op
Iceland's visitor hangout had been extraordinarily helpful, with top tips from Friðrik Skúlason and recent visitors John Duffey and Susi Dyck For the operation we needed a level 7 portal with the vrla and three more link amps to be safe. Eyþór Ingi Áskelsson identified a remote location called Gunnhuver, 50km from the city, part of a geopark and the epicenter of geothermal activity in the area. It includes the country's largest boiling mud pool, and the volcanic portal site was marked by a plume of steam visible from 10km away. The portal? claimed by a German player but with no mods, I messaged him after to check it wasn't a guardian. It gave us a chance to be stealthy. I went to scout it, and found my driving skills tested by the steep gravel slopes. Eyþór Ingi Áskelsson agreed to come on the evening adventure, and got roped into driving for the late night trip!
The tension waiting to field was high. We monitored progress on the layers. Mark Whittingham and Sascha Rodiek scoured Intel. We knew we had a really tight schedule with enlightened already present at an anchor. Jan Sievertsen answered a comm call to take down two obscure Danish blockers with only one hours notice. #resistancehero Angie Angelosa had Spain well under control. Nuno Fonseca was poised for action. Lucy Shires ran outside to take down her block. We waited on Gilles. Word came, "Spinnaker under attack!!!! Vincent R. is running to make the base link for your field, Vicki! Now link link link!!!!!!!"
It went up! 36.6 million MU! Screenshots obtained, congratulations from surprised agents around the UK and Ireland, Eyþór Ingi Áskelsson made a huge link to the Azores and Nuno Fonseca closed a bonus field. We were ecstatic. And freezing. And soaked with rain. Next the hair-raising drive back to the paved road to Reykjavik. What a fantastic Ingress adventure!
Thanks to my brother Gavin Aiken to whom I dedicate this part of the op. He inspires and encourages my sense of adventure at all times.
