Operation “Date Night With Mike” aka #Helios Artefact 30
Five hours from spawn in New Zealand, to target in Australia, via 3 lighthouses, across 1900km of sea
Introduction
With only two days notice New Zealand and Australian Resistance were informed that we would be receiving, respectively, a spawning artefact in Taupo, and the Resistance Target portal in Sydney. Planning kicked into action very quickly. About 24 hours later, an agent named Mike made a potential and accidental OpSec mistake. Whilst the risk was small of an information leak, changes were made, and for the New Zealand to Eden component of the operation, it quickly became known as Date Night With Mike, and it stuck. Soon enough, Artefact 30 was simply called Mike by the Kiwis.
Planning
From a New Zealand perspective, a lot of the Resistance planning and potential direction for Mike’s movements were made for us as a result of the remains of a significant Enlightened fielding operation (https://plus.google.com/112879439900254986764/posts/ZbH4UWd521k) that resulted in the largest ever MU field on the Sunday over the North Island of New Zealand. Props EN! With three challenging anchors and significant links still in play, efforts were focused on using them to our advantage, rather than breaking them down and going north. So, south seemed to be the path of lesser Resistance, and even fewer Enlightened.
For those that aren’t aware, the distance between Australia and New Zealand is around 1900-2000km, so there are limited jumping off options for using a maxed out P8 with 4 Rare Link Amps (#HeExtendsNaturally) providing 1966km of linking goodness. Options are reduced even further by practical linking keys. It soon became clear that a Cape Foulwind to Eden link was the best Trans-Tasman linking option that could be organised at short notice, especially with the requirement of 8 agents to P8 a portal in a remote location in New Zealand (whilst 1 agent was 1 hours drive away, 2 were 2.5 hours, and the remaining 5 were 4 hours drive away - one way). Building a native P8 was far preferable to building via flipcards in a dynamic environment.
Other options were certainly considered and discussed, but in the end, Foulwind-Eden was the only one that was presented with a feasible plan in time, and that the logistics appeared to work, so all the efforts were poured into turning that into an operation.
It was expected that there would be a significant battle for the spawning portal, and we attempted to rally as many agents as possible to hike up the hill, and if necessary, capture and defend it anomaly-style until jumptime. From Trig, we were hoping to execute a jump to a relatively isolated part of New Zealand, that was within reach of Australia, and a long way from a timely Enlightened response.
From the other side of the detch, excitement about Sydney playing host to the Resistance target portal, as well as the spawning of a bunch of close by artifacts was met with a mix of fear and pleasure. Possibly even the odd agent peeing themselves in a mixture of nervous anticipation and excitement.
Artifacts, to paraphrase Willow Rosenberg, make people do the wacky, and to have 27 descend on our land? Once the initial shock wore down, we set about making plans. Our initial fantasy was to have corralled the artifact that had spawned in south Western Australia, sent it across to Tasmania and have that join up with Mike the Kiwi. Fabulous work by our Tasmanian team meant they were a constant option throughout the event, and agents from every state and territory provided valuable input into possible paths, problems and progressions.
Operation -Wednesday 10th September 2014
1800NZST / 1600AEST / 0600UTC - Mike Spawned at Mount Tauhura Trig
During the day the call was made to rendezvous at a location other than the Mount Tauhara carpark - hopefully to maintain a bit of a surprise as to the number of agents we had mustered for the spawn. A local Mega-store was chosen due to proximity, cafe and the hope that all good hardware stores would sell gloves and beanies, which proved correct. An early scouting party was sent up to the Trig while the remaining agents had a quick briefing and organised vehicles and gear for the teams clearing blockers.
On the climb to the summit, the party was split up relatively quickly due to varying levels of fitness (and prior blisters for one keen agent), and also the need to get required keys to the top as quickly as possible. As darkness fell and headlamps were switched on, we received news that the artefact had spawned, and soon after came across 2 EN agents, Rustyfox and waiwhare. Ops was advised of this development and agents proceeded to the top. By the time most agents arrived, clouds and darkness had set in, however thankfully the wind and rain was playing the game. We set up camp slightly down the track but still in range of the portal for more shelter, with the final numbers being 10 RE to 2 EN.
Around 1830, the portal was ‘cleaned’ of mods, flipped to Resistance, and the agents settled in for defense. A link was fired out to My Great Aunt Kate to act as both a decoy and blocker - to keep the primary lane to Fowlwind open. Alas, one blocking link wasn’t remove in time, and at 1900, Mike sat on his behind, and had to hang around for another hour. The block was cleared soon thereafter.
With 30 minutes to the next jump, Rustyfox/EN managed to flip the portal just before the Resistance. The shields melted, and the portal was vaporised in short order, and soon reinstated in glorious blue with a gold artefact on top. Some blockers appear in Opunake, but there were soon dispatched by Supergeek007/RE, and My Great Aunt Kate was relinked.
2000 rolled around, and this time Mike jumped the 500+km to Cape Foulwind Lighthouse in the South Island of New Zealand.
2000 / 1800 / 0800 - Mike jumps to Cape Foulwind
Upon arrival of Mike, there wasn’t much to do, other than take gratuitous screenies of Mike, including in a few different shades as we flipped, neutralised, and reinstated the portal as a P7. The decision to use Foulwind was a good one, the nearest EN were likely 2.5 hours drive away, so it was uncontested.
With 15 minutes to jump, we upgraded the lighthouse to a natural P8, and then naturally anointed the portal with 4 Rare Link Amps - #HeExtendsNaturally . The link to Eden was put in place with around 10 minutes to jump, and then we sat back and bid Mike a fond adieu as he was transported off New Zealand shores, and became Australia’s problem.
2100 / 1900 / 0900 - Jumps to Eden Lighthouse
Resistance agents Tekstep, tq23 and Andrew118 had travelled up to 600km to converge on the coastal town of Eden. The plan had been to receive the artifact from the New Zealand team, and pass it through to Seal Rocks (a small coastal settlement 275km NNE of Sydney) an hour later. Green activity from the local Enlightened had roused suspicion – they definitely knew something was happening - agent Fragarach2550 was traversing the coastal area (long distances between portals up and down on the South Coast, and had captured the strategic Green Cape Lighthouse at 0530 UTC. Luckily for the Resistance, his movements had led him further west, meaning the team of Resistance agents had time to build it, and as the link from New Zealand was received at the portal: Lighthouse Eden NSW - the Enlightened were too far away to do anything about the transfer.
Once Eden had been inoculated by the Eden team, Foulwind reinstated a blocking link, then headed off into Westport to P8 the town and have a celebratory farm, and maybe the odd coffee for the long drive we would soon be facing.
Hurriedly Fragarach2550 made it back to Eden six minutes prior to the (0900 UTC) jump. The South Coast team successfully defended, using their one and only key to the Seal Rocks portal - the artifact leaping up to Sugarloaf Lighthouse - a typical 9 hour car journey up the coastline.
2200 / 2000 / 1000 - Jumps to Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse
At 0300 UTC, Resistance agent Namarrgon met with iged, ElastiGirl and CarltonDragget and drove them to the target portal to silently “key farm” it. After the Duke Kahanamoku Mosaic portal was burnt out, the keys were gifted to Namarrgon who swapped his previous teammates for agents atmokineticist and lousy for a journey three and a half hours North-East, to their portal at Sugarloaf Lighthouse. Having ZomOfAu clearing the blocking links in between family commitments was amazing - the portal was subsequently upgraded to Level 7. The wait once the artifact was received was nervous but well constructed, and the picturesque lighthouse rays & supermoon rising over a rock-studded ocean gave the experience a particularly surreal tone. Whilst blocking links were being eviscerated around the target portal in Sydney, a number of decoy links were put in place. These decoys fell when the inoculation happened with 20 minutes before the jump, it was obvious to those on the ground that the decoy links had worked in so much as drawing a couple of the Enlightened ground crew away from the target portal. The link to Duke Kahanamoku Mosaic was created, and the ground battle near the target became the focus of the final struggle for the night.
About 30 minutes after the arrival of Mike at Sugarloaf, the Cape Foulwind agents celebrated with Longest Link stat buffing from the North Beach portal in Westport, firing celebratory strands of blue across the Tasman so all eight agents ended up with 1900+km Longest Links. Was a great way to end the night before rather long drives home.
2300 / 2100 / 1100 - Jumps to Target - Duke Kahanamoku Mosaic
Shelly Beach Shenanigans
Away from the target portal, pockets of battles raged all over the surrounding area. Around Manly, the portals along the scenic walk towards Shelley Beach were seeing more activity than they would normally have visits in a month. Enlightened agent mtac found himself up against rolling teams of Resistance block clearers with: scrad, Challywong, gonefishinginoz, Rivals, Hindley, twowugs, irreducible, rbeck, Jarrad352, Nezagu amongst others. It was vital that this walkway remain contested or controlled - links by either side could have swung the battle at the target portal in either direction due to their clear line of visibility.
Long Reef Cleaning
The other end of the blocking links that required the Resistance to attend to before the final jump could be made were at Long Reef Beach headland (close to Dee Why and Collaroy). After attempting to drive close to it and failing due to a closed path marking, Resistance agents: thegruffy, Vtreka, iged and CarltonDragget bashed their way in the dark out to the point – some along the beach, others along a longer but sturdier path. Upon killing the multitude of portals and redeploying them as Level 7s, the decision was made to observe Intel for a while and ultimately return to the target portal.
Battle for the Duke
A large contingent of Resistance and Enlightened agents gathered at the target portal to wrestle over control for the final jump. Employing an Ultrastrike-heavy tactic, legendary Enlightened agents such as Sh4p3r and cBallsy evaporated Rare and Very Rare Shields, the Resistance agents on the ground replacing them as quickly as they disappeared. Tense times on the ground continued as the jump time continually approached - the Resistance held strongly - not even losing a single resonator. The jump from Sugarloaf Lighthouse to Duke Kahanamoku Mosaic portal was complete, and Artifact #30 completed its journey and scored another vital Helios point for the Worldwide Resistance team.
Recognition
This was truly a supreme effort by all agents involved, especially when considering the very short timeframe it was planned in, and the associated logistical challenges and constraints.
Many sacrifices were made including work, time, money, sleep, family, spousal disapproval, and the roadkill of small furry animals. To see the Australia - New Zealand Resistance agents rally and organise at such short notice and make great commitments and actions was a joy to behold.
