On Sunday, July 27th, a member of our community suffered a tragic loss. Agent @DarkKn1ght lost his brother, Ryan, in a drowning accident on Lake Allatoona. The story can be found here: http://www.11alive.com/story/news/local/lawrenceville-snellville/2014/07/31/lake-allatoona-drowning-ryan-tyndall-soldier-afghanistan/13444345/ .
@DarkKn1ght is well respected and very much loved in the ATL community, and around the US, as he is always there to lend a hand, and support his fellow agents. So when we heard of his devastating loss, we knew we needed to show him our support and do what we could to help raise money to help the pregnant wife and two small children his brother left behind.
The idea soon arose to make field art in the shape of the Bat Symbol, both signifying our support of @DarkKn1ght and his family, but also as a way to ask for help in the form of donations, so that his brother’s widow and young children are not burdened with funeral costs. What this field has become, was so much more than any of us expected.
When I (@Kazoodles) was originally approached with the idea of the field art, I was just told “Make a Batman Symbol”. So I drew one up (with my ‘colored pencils’) and presented it to see if it was what they were looking for. Originally it was thought to be too large and that we would never be able to pull it off. So I went to @DarkKn1ght’s wife,@snotslayer, and asked her what she thought about making it cross faction, something Atlanta has never successfully done. She immediately pulled in @Tromeo, a local ENL mod, and pitched the idea to him. Within 24 hours we had over 50 agents both ENL and RES on board with us.
As the chat grew, I watched the personalities in the room and was amazed at how people who were considered to be “arch nemeses” were laughing and joking and offering each other rides on the day of the operation. ENL agents spent hours gathering keys to drop for RES agents that would need them for the field. RES agents did the same, gathering keys for the ENL. I am not ashamed to say, I was in tears many times watching the community come together and heal in ways I wasn’t even aware needed healing.
The field was set for Saturday night, and a dinner was planned leading up to the event for us to exchange keys, get our marching orders and talk things over. Well over 50 people showed up to take part in the pre-field dinner. Additional agents had shown up to be a part of this event that were not signed up before. I was floored at the number of agents on both sides that were moved by this enough to come out and spend their Saturday night working WITH the other side instead of against them. We had agents from all over Georgia, and even 2 agents from Texas, travel countless miles to show their love and support for the Tyndall Family.
After dinner, role call, and adding the last minute agents to the list, we divvied up the links to be thrown. Key exchanges were made (which took the better part of an hour for all the keys we had!) and those agents took off to their designated portals to throw from. Other agents went out to take down a few last minute blockers that had come up. Many agents waited in the parking lot for last minute orders if any complications were to arise. But finally, after 4 hours of driving, linking, laughing, roadblocks, and one dead car battery, the incredible memorial artwork was done. The fields were up. One wing blue, showing support from the Resistance, one wing green signifying support from the Enlightened, and a few teal fields in the middle, signifying our ability to look past color and faction and come together when one of our own needs us.
Agent @Darkkn1ght was able to write down his thoughts and experiences as well:
“I (agent DarkKn1ght) lost my brother on July 27th, 2014 when he drowned in Lake Allatoona just outside of Atlanta, Ga. His sudden death has hit our family very hard as he was only 26 and leaves behind a wife who is 6 weeks pregnant and two small children. I lost a brother, but they lost a loving husband and a father and are trying to pick up the pieces and figure out how they are going to get by. We laid him to rest on August 1st and I will always remember these moments from the funeral:
Seeing my brother for the last time here on earth lying peaceful and still with his wife sobbing over his body for hours.
The casket closing and my dad crying as he told his son goodbye.
Chance, my brother’s 5 year old son, walking up to my dad and saying “My daddy drowned at the lake”; too young to understand and completely oblivious to what that really means.
Giving up on fighting the tears as I carried my brother’s casket away.
The soldier at the burial site folding up the flag, kneeling down and presenting it to Chance.
“During this sad time, I want to thank the Ingress community for coming alongside me and my family, not only in words of support and encouragement, but also in action with countless hugs and emotional embraces. We’ve had agents we are close to watch our children and pets while we helped with funeral arrangements and such. Realizing his wife’s financial need, Ingress agents from all over have given thousands of dollars through a donation fund setup on GoFundMe.com in what we are calling Rally for Ryan. To show further support and awareness, over 40 agents from both factions came together for a dinner and cross faction field art OP the day after his funeral. The goal was simple: both ENL and RES set aside differences and rivalries to come together for an event to support a fellow agent going through an unexpected tragedy and commemorate Ryan. There was an untold amount of effort and planning involved in executing this and the resulting set of fields are incredible: a bat symbol of blue and green fields spanning 45+ miles touching 9 counties in the south metro Atlanta area including Ryan’s hometown where he grew up. Each faction worked together to create 9 fields each (18 fields in all, anchored by a total of 54 portals).
“I continue to be amazed and blown away by what the Ingress community is capable of. Both my family and I would like to thank each and every Ingress agent that has shared in our grief. From a simple thought or prayer, to both sides working together in cross-faction fields, to giving to a widow in need; it has been truly awe-inspiring to see the compassion and sympathy that we are all capable of.
