Every January, Idiot Labs organizes a shopping cart race/art parade/pub crawl called the Idiotarod. This year, five brave members of the New York and Long Island Resistance built a mobile, level 8 portal sculpture and dragged it around Brooklyn on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
We called ourselves the Special Mobile Urban Resistance Force or S.M.U.R.F.s and dressed in character. As people asked us to explain our cart, we handed them recruitment cards and showed them the game on our scanners. We took down green portals and built RP7s all along the route.
Mike M/@8bitlogic fabricated resonators with a 3-D printer, put LEDs inside and programmed an Arduino controller to flash them. John Fowler/@prophetsavant sourced costumes. John and myself/@ruidh transformed an ordinary shopping cart into a mobile portal. Ana B/@QueKat made lettering, prepared Smurfette's jumper and played the iconic character. Ken Levin/@BestKenEver secured us our place in the race.
The team had to pass various checkpoints and undergo testing by Idiot Labs personnel including an anatomy quiz, pole dancing, and donations of blood, saliva and pubic hairs. There may have been some drinking. All in the name of SCIENCE!
Pictures of the team appeared on the websites of Gothamist, the Village Voice and the New York Daily News.
