Goonies or Die!
Saturday morning started early for many of us. We gathered in our local communities to collect donated gear or farm, then off we went for an adventure!
Astoria Oregon: situated at the mouth of the Columbia river, Astoria is home to many unique treasures, and amazing sights to see. Founded by and named after John Astor and the American Fur Company, Astoria is rich with history. Astoria also has many fun claims to fame such as being the birth-place of the acting career of legendary actor Clark Gable; and many movies having been filmed there including Short Circuit, The Black Stallion, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, Benji the Hunted, The Ring Two, Into the Wild, The Guardian, Cthulhu and our favorite, and the center of our expedition, The Goonies!
The 1985 cult classic movie The Goonies is an adventure for all ages. Its plot being a rag tag group of kids who set out on a life changing adventure, involving pirates, thieves, treasure maps, and most importantly a group of friends working to save their homes in a town they love.
Taking into account our love for The Goonies, and the fact that "Goonies never say die!" we decided this was the perfect location to start our adventure. 22 agents, from 7 cities met up in Astoria, as part of a global operation to light up 100 cities around the world with Enlightened P8's. We started by meeting up for a fun meal and some bs to plan the mission out. From there we headed to the famous Goonies House, then we were off and running for the adventure of a lifetime.
We fought with a car overheating, and a lack of familiarity with the town. We had a last minute agent sense something fun was going down, reach out in comms and hitch a ride into town with inbound agents. Then true to PNW fashion, there was the insane weather. We faced winds strong enough to knock players over as we were jumping out of cars and running for portals, sideways rain, agent joeandjeep and her love for splashing in fountains, and a visit from our own 'Fratellis' attempting to put an end to our adventure, knocking our portal count from 52 to 34. True to Enlightened nature though, and calling on the immoveable strength of Chunk himself, we held strong.
5 hours later Astoria stood bright and glowing in layers of links and fields, with 114 standing P8's. Most importantly though. Not a single Resistance portal anywhere in town to be seen. Amazing job agents!
