OPERATION GROUNDHOG
#IngressReport #Sitrep #Ingress #GroundhogDay #Crossfaction #Pensacola
Background: In Pensacola, Florida, an Enlightened going under the agent name of @Groundhog1471 has been a regular and entertaining fixture in Ingress Comms. His work portal, Taco Rock, has been Ground Zero for hundreds of lunches, ambushes, and epic battles. They say if you could zoom in close enough on the pixels on the game map there you would find the dusty husks of thousands of discarded Power Cubes and bursted resonators. Then, something terrible happened: His day job started claiming more and more of his available time.
Resistance agents @Lonfiction and @M0rTuS(RES Co-Leads) and many others started missing him in the game. Ideas were tossed around about things to do on Groundhog’s Day to lure him out of his hole.@M0rTuS put the finishing touches on an unexpected plan: Starburst Taco Rock in blue under a green field—Creating Pensacola’s very first Cross-Faction Field Art.
The Team: Enlightened agents @FoxII(ENL Lead) and @bodashe were contacted first. They brought @izcarra, @Maitre87, and Groundhog’s wife @Jade2014 into the plan. On the Resistance side,@M0rTuS and @Lonfiction pulled @LPsSidekick, @MysticRedNeck, and @WETWOOFUS in to help with the starburst.
Preparation:@Lonfiction and @M0rTuS had lunch at Taco Rock, collecting a few keys and turning it blue a few days before the op so that it could be re-killed and modded out correctly for key farming by Groundhog’s friend and co-worker ENL @Maitre87. The bulk of the keys were collected by @Maitre87 right under @Groundhog1471’s nose as they ate lunch there.
@M0rTuS worked out a plan for thirty links to Taco Rock, and worked with @FoxII to set up a nice double field over the whole thing. Over the next few days, blockers were cleared by all and sundry to keep the playing field open.
Game Night: The op was planned for late Sunday night, so Groundhog would see it first thing in the morning. The morning after SuperBowl Sunday. Most of us thought the game would go longer and we’d get started around 11.
The game ended sooner than that, and Agents from both sides converged on Taco Rock. We moved shortly after to the Laundromat next door, since apparently some dude lives in the RV that is permanently parked out back. Several agents wore shirts of the opposing color for the night.
We took the time to get a group photo of the op team and for @M0rTuS to hand out awesome 3D Printed badges commemorating the event. Badges were passed to @bodashe for transfer to @Groundhog1471, @Maitre87, and @Jade2014 as well. We relocated one more time for a better lit photo with all of us in it, then set off about our assignments.
@FoxII and @Izcarra had already thrown the green base link before arriving. They made their way to the first closure portal with @bodashe, who threw the second link.
@Lonfiction and LPsSidekick went in one car putting 10 links of the starburst in place from the west and southwest.@WETWOOFUS cast another 10 from along Davis Highway to the north and east.@M0rTuS and @MysticRedNeck each took 5 links along the east and southeast.
One of the links was blocked from inside the closed compound of Pensacola Christian College. It was decided to complete the op without that one, at least partially because none of us looked respectable enough to fool the security guard at their gate!@WETWOOFUS found two more portals to throw from, bringing the final count to 31 links.
When all the links were fired,@FoxII and @Izcarra each fired a field-closing link, placing the blue starburst under a green field.
Messages were placed in Comm-All saying Happy Groundhog’s Day. The Hog was genuinely moved, both he and @Jade2014 reported back not long after. Turns out it’s hard to sleep when your phone is buzzing off the nightstand. He said he’d been thinking how much he enjoyed the local skirmishes and rivalries, and when he got up to see what was going on in Intel he was speechless. (@Jade2014 stated for the record that this doesn’t happen very often, nor does he usually get taken by surprise.)
Wrap-up: The @Groundhog1471 did not see his shadow and get scared; he gazed upon a great burst of light over a beloved lunch portal and declared we’d be seeing more of him in our scanners in the weeks to come.
Mission accomplished on OPERATION GROUNDHOG, with a side achievement of Pensacola’s First Cross-Faction Field Art. While this particular CF Field Art wasn't super-extravagant or anything, the OPERATION GROUNDHOG team hopes we've just opened the door to bolder and more intricate two-tone designs from our fellow agents in days and years to come.
