sitrep: Cross Faction Friendship Day Field Art Turku Åbo Finland

We are proud to have produced the first ever Cross Faction Field Art in Turku / Åbo.  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turku )  Here, in Finland, 14th of February is called Friendship Day in Finnish (Ystävänpäivä) and All Hearts Day (Alla hjärtans dag) in Swedish - both a celebration of friendships much more than the romantic connotations it has elsewhere.

This was a perfect day to produce something tangible from the relatively recently established Turku / Åbo Cross Faction Harmony Ingress Group.  It was agreed we would use Kupittaa Park ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kupittaa ) where one can see the Friendship Trees from all of Turku's Twinned Towns.

We are still relatively few players here, so our group includes players from South-West Finland and Åland.  We were especially grateful to Jaana and Jari from Hanko who made the two hour drive to help out when a few of our local players turned out to be unavailable - and it was especially nice that they brought their gorgeous baby girl Ada (!) with them to oversee proceedings with her wide eyed gaze.

We have never tried anything like this before - many of us have never even met before! We were delighted that everyone made extra efforts with communication - mixing Finnish, Swedish and English to allow everyone equal chance to understand and participate.

We decided to make one large heart with one half green and one half blue and then in act of true Ingress cooperation, remake the heart with one half blue and one half green, to demonstrate our equality and ability to play together with friendly coordination, thus producing a beating heart of Cross Faction friendship.

It also showed our mutual pride that Turku / Åbo has produced both the first level 16 Blue Ingress player and the first level 16 Green Ingress player in Finland - both participating. The mixture of languages, nationalities, genders and player levels demonstrated the rich diversity of this town.

We all play quite hard here, but today we showed that we can also become friends across factions, not just within, and after each hard won battle, for either side, it is much more fun to congratulate our fellow players, share some candy or coffee and wave in friendship before battle recommences! I was heartened (pun intended) to see the field art still undisturbed as I drove away after an enjoyable café break with players from both sides.
