It all started on February 25th when an idea was floated to field over our favorite downtown Enlightened player to mess with, ███████. After a brief discussion, we decided we didn't just want to make a small field over h██ work portal, we might as well field over all of downtown Pittsburgh. This had in a matter of minutes grown far beyond just fielding over someone's work portal!
Now, fielding over downtown Pittsburgh had been done before a few times, with single fields first by agent @ivanrussell and former agent @drs155, and subsequent single fields by agents @djbassmekanik( Andrew Griesmann) and @guyfinisheslast( Guy Cothal), as well as a 5-layer field, again by agent @djbassmekanik. We knew that to do this right, we had to go even bigger.
A plan was fairly quickly come up with to create a 10-layer sprawl of fields that would cover the downtown Golden Triangle and then some. This plan was quickly dubbed: Operation Bluish-Golden Triangle. This plan was ambitious for several reasons: First of all, no fields of this size had ever been done over downtown Pittsburgh. Second, only a single field had ever covered the city in the middle of a workday. Thirdly, and perhaps most worrisome, was that part of the field cut right through a heavily Enlightened work area and farm. The fielding plan for this op was designed by agent @bocoroth, with additional coordination and agent gathering by agent @rainbeam.
The date of 4/20 was settled on because of obvious "green" connections to the date and also because conflicts in scheduling arose for some of the agents involved. Wondering and suspecting there might be some sort of Enlightened event planned for the night, it was decided that not only would this be the biggest and most-layered fields over downtown in Pittsburgh history, but also that it would take place just after lunch on what would be a normal work day. This would not be easy to pull off, certainly.
Early in the planning stages, it was decided that the anchor portals would be ███████████ ██████████████████████████████, as a precaution against ███████████ ████████████████████████████. The anchor points were also chosen specifically to have limited normal access so they would be difficult to tear down quickly.
The planning chats went dormant throughout much of March and early April as other events came up. Discussion and activity picked up again shortly after the April First Saturday.
Keys were farmed sporadically during the weeks of April 5th and 12th. The initial plan was to collect enough keys so that everyone involved would be able to charge anchors if attacked; however, this proved impractical due to the large number of agents and limited amount of keys that were farmed.
One week prior to zero-hour, the local ENL took over downtown and AXA'ed everything, but that was quickly taken care of. A pre-game clearing took place on a rainy Sunday night for agents who were not available on Monday to still be involved. Only green links were cleared at this time, as well as ███████████████████ █████████████████████████ ███████████████████. However, there was still plenty to be done the next day, even after asking the main players in the downtown and surrounding areas to not link across the rivers all week.
The day of the event threatened rain all day, but only one small cloudburst happened during the morning and only occasional sprinkles during the day. Agents met each other at ████████ ████████ at 10:00 to do final key exchanges and test communications. Clearing began at 12:00, with an estimated 50 Jarvis Viruses used to clear blue links. Intel and communication over Zello was handled smoothly by our Zello op,@RJT185. Some confusion occurred when one of our teammates, who had knowledge of this op, unknowingly threw a blocking link just before the first field was to go up. Other than this minor mishap, clearing proceeded without incident.
By 13:20, the first field was up. A small flair-up of ENL activity around the time of the 5th field going up added some extra anxiety, but the 6 inner fields from the Confluence to the 10th and 16th street bridges were complete by 13:26. The outer layers were taken care of in short order as well, with the fields anchored at Hunt Stained Glass Statues in the West End up by 13:28, the fields anchored at Consumers Produce Memorial in the Strip District up by 13:32, the fields anchored at Oliver Bath House up by 13:34, and finally the 10th and final layer of fields anchored at Elmer Clark Memorial up by 13:36.
The majority of the fields lasted for 25 minutes before the northeast anchors were taken out by Enlightened agent @rawhideriddler, and the central anchors were partially taken out by Enlightened agent @jjstorm later in the day. However, the western and southeastern anchors are still currently standing as of this writing as a testament to the Resistance!
