ReplyDeleteJoe Philley you hit it on the nose with your statement. Sky diving you have 2 chances zip line and bungee jumping no such luck. Coming from a guy that had to pull his reserve after a malfunction with main.

ReplyDeleteDakoda Gabriel I've only had 1 reserve ride since I started skydiving in 2000. Had pilot chute over the nose, and it collapsed 3/4 of my main. Spinning out of control to 2000' cut away and rode my reserve in. Got up grabbed a couple beers and was done for the day.
ReplyDeleteGina Campbell I started skydiving back in the 1970's. The equipment and training are so much better now. It's the difference between driving around in a model T, and wheeling around in a Porsche. Lot safer as well.

ReplyDeleteBigDoggTheDon the experience is flying, truly flying. A finger move can cause you to turn. Basically, you are in the element. You ARE the plane.
ReplyDeleteBigDoggTheDon For what it's worth, when I did a jump back in the '70s it was standard for the reserve to have a blank shotgun shell tied to some kind of altitude sensor in it. If you fell through 1,000 foot level moving too fast it would fire and deploy the reserve, just in case you were unconscious. I don't think landing while unconscious would be too good for you, but it beats making a dent in the planet.

ReplyDeleteDEFINITELY not! Part of the experience is doing it for yourself. Having somebody else jump for you while you hang on is just...wrong.
Besides, how's it going to sound after?
"Yeah, I jumped out of an airplane strapped to this guy." or
"I just jumped out of a perfectly good airplane because I wanted to see what it was like."
Which one's going to get the props, the ones you give yourself? Jumping tandem is like being a tourist.
Besides, on your first couple of jumps, the ripcord is attached to the airplane and when you jump the chute opens for you.
Check it out.
When you're standing on the ground after you land you will be SO buzzed, with a big goofy grin on your face. You'll also be somewhat amazed with yourself. Solo is so, so worth it.
You only get one first jump, so don't ruin it.
deltavee2 I jumped AFF my first 6 jumps and progressed to solo jumps. I also really enjoy 14k hop and pop. The view can't be beat. Especially up here in Alaska.

ReplyDeleteI then spent an hour and a half looking at the pictures you have put up, and all the positivity expressed in many of them. You obviously get why we're here.
You should definitely add a parachute jump to your experience base. It is unique and from what I have seen of your page, you will love it. It will be like nothing else you have experienced.

ReplyDeletedeltavee2 If you go AFF, which is the modern way to go, your first jump is a full freefall with two instructors holding you from two sides. After two jumps on average you jump with only one.

ReplyDeletePsh, there is nothing wrong with going tandem the first time. I went tandem the first time. A year later I went back and did IAD. Now I have my license. Sure, solo is WAY more fun. But if you want a good first experience of the whole thing, go tandem. Unless you're serious about jumping. If you're serious, go AFF but you better have some $$$ to back you up. AFF isn't cheap.
