Operation: Sock It

Operation: Sock It

As many of you may have heard, observed, or even experienced firsthand, homelessness is a epidemic here in Portland. On any given night over 4,000 people sleep on the street or in shelters. The problem is so overwhelming that it's sometimes hard to know where to start or how you could help. While we can't solve the problem overnight there are little things that you or I can do that go a long way. One of these things is donating socks. Socks are the number one most requested item at homeless shelters. By providing a shelter with socks we can help free up their funds to assist in programs to help people get jobs and off the streets on a permanent basis. It's a simple and inexpensive act that goes a long way.

This Saturday we are respectfully requesting donations of at least one pair of brand new socks. Athletic socks are preferred, in either Women's, Men's, or Kid's sizes. We will have donation bins set up at the Waterfront Marriott and Kells Irish Pub to collect the socks. In addition there are password protected missions that start at Pioneer Square and end at Kells (but you can hack in any order). When you put your socks in the bin you will be given the passcode to complete the mission. All socks collected will be donated to a local charity and then put directly onto the feet of people in need. #ingressforgood #deploywithcompassion

TL;DR donate a pair of socks this Saturday and you'll help the local homeless and get a cool mission badge.

  4. Viridian Siren every shelter needs them so you can donate at your local charity or directly to a homeless person on the street.

  5. They're right Viridian Siren - socks are the most needed (and often least donated) item at homeless shelters.
