Operation #firstto40  AAR, using 11 #SoftbankUltraLink

Ingress anomalies are funny things.  They push your community to the breaking point!  Exhausting all your leaders and volunteers and fundamentally changing your ingress community.   Whatever, doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.  It was during this post-anomaly high in Portland, Oregon when I found myself working intel for the op #firstto40 .

On Monday July 22, following the Resistance win of the #persepolis anomaly series, agent @sammmreed and myself (@9unter) were sharing our war stories about the recent Portland Anomaly.  I mentioned off hand that it was believed that 4 softbank link amps could throw 40 links from one portal, but nobody really knew for sure.  Sam pointed out that 40 links would make the fields he threw along the portal spine of Hawthorn Avenue in Portland, Oregon double in size if he!  So I said lets be first to try!

Within 3 hours we had developed an op in principle, using only our phones.  We started a hangout bringing in many of those exhausted team leads from just two days before.  In my two years of ingress this spontaneous operation was the most excited I had been in a long time!

Our idea was simple to run a 39 layered field shooting 40 links from 2 anchors.  Both anchors would require eight softbank ultra links.  We had to ask around to get all the amps we needed, people used their newly redeemed item cards from their anomaly packs.  We were able to create, 7 total car squads, and 1 biker from “rogue squadron”.  All the agents we could muster in 24 hours, our plan was set.

Our operation was set for the 10pm checkpoint, and it didn’t begin well.  One of the first agents on the scene at our muster point, notified us of enlightened agents already on site.  We hadn’t even started the op and I had to have our agents hide and push our already tight timeline back.  We also had a mass of friendly links that would need to cleared for our fields to go up.  At the start time of the operation there were over 50 blocking links in the way.

At 9:00 pm the operation began with just 1 hour to complete our task.  We set our teams on a link clearing rampage, using Jarvus and bursters alike to clear the lanes for our anchor teams.  It was during this time that our lone bike team member discovered a group of enlightened agents and single handedly held them to one portal, expending all his inventory of bursters while the rest of his team cleared the links around them.

Eventually, we came very close to our planned timeline at 9:40 the first link went out from our southern anchor.  Modded with 2 link amps 16 links were fired in rapid succession.  Four minutes later our northern anchor was modded with 4 link amps and all possible links were fired in succession.  We were so close to complete in our goal, when something unexpected happened.  A friendly resistance agent angry at our excessive use of jarvis on his portals, jarvued our southern anchor in retribution.

Our team, rallied and in 8 minutes re-deployed using three additional link amps and a shield to protect them.  We refired all the links we could and brought our fields back up.  In the end we were able to establish thirty-two links from our southern anchor, The maximum for 3 amps, and thirty-six from our northern anchor.  While every link did not layer and field the, end result was very pretty site!
