Operation Moonshot

First and foremost, huge thanks and respect from the whole op team go out to agent Iso8583 Lawrence Rowan for jumping on his motorcycle in the midday heat to ride from Dubai to Abu Dhabi at zero notice and take down a last minute blocker. Without him, this wouldn’t have happened.
Now, the story.
In the aftermath of the #Persepolis shenanigans, the day before a faction meetup on June 2, I had a spur-of-the-moment idea to take advantage of an existing base link from Karachi to Peshawar, Pakistan, as a shortcut to my Onyx Illuminator badge.
After initially looking at fielding from Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, agent LevelEight Atif Siddiqui and I decided to see if we could get a team together to do it from Ruwais so that we could cover most of the UAE in the process. During the meetup we managed to rope a few more agents together, and a plan was born for the next day.
In order to reach Peshawar, which at about 2200 km was beyond the range of a P8 with 4 RLA, we gathered 4 SoftBank Ultra Links at the meetup, which allowed us to reach up to 2500 km or so with just a P7 (5xR8). This had the added benefit of letting us build the portals at the last minute, instead of flipping to upgrade as we had initially thought, which would have given up the plan an hour early. Huge thanks to agent MrAlansaari Mohamed Alansaari for donating his SBUL!
Both teams headed out at about 9 in the morning Friday, July 3. This was not easy for the Dubai group, who had only gotten home from the meetup and team mission day in old Dubai at around 4 am. We did not get to our respective homes after the op until 2-4 am Saturday, July 4.
Our friends in Abu Dhabi, agents cookimonster Lindi Prior and TenCamels Ten Camels, drove from Abu Dhabi to Ruwais the long way, via Madinat Zayed, to take out a blocking link.
Dubai agent LevelEight and I (Eirrann) drove the very long way from Dubai to Ruwais, via Al Ain, to take out a bunch of blocking links. All told, we drove about 1,000 km in a day (see the MyTracks images below). We were joined by agent Fighter4Life AinaweeUAE, from Al Ain/Abu Dhabi, who ended up traveling the furthest of all with a whopping 1300+ km.
This being the holy month of Ramadan in the UAE, neither team had any food or water from sunrise until after the fields went up, just after sunset, when we had a celebratory Iftar dinner. Suffice it to say that this was not an easy task in 50+ degree Celsius heat! (In fact, I've been home recovering from heat exhaustion and dehydration today. I don't recommend going a full day of Ingress in the desert heat without water.)
I got the first field up 5 minutes before our desired CP, but then we were hammered by technical difficulties with a scanner for the next hour. In the end, we managed to get six layers up of 17.3 million MU each for a total of about 103.8 million MU, including a last minute effort by Karachi agents Junaid2001 Junaid Rahman and his son, Abdur07, to set up the fifth and sixth layers (his son got quadruple Onyx Illuminator on his first ever field).
Right now, agents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are busy hunting down the 13 remaining RES MU in our cell. We’ve gotten the cell north of Dubai down to zero RES MU, and there are just a few stragglers left in ours.
The fields are still up as of this writing; it will be interesting to see how long they last.
Hopefully other members of the op team will share their stories, too.
