Resistance Berlin Sitrep "Sommer in Berlin"
TL;DR On the weekend of 2015-07-11 the Enlightened planned a big event in Berlin. It leaked, so we planned an event on top. With 550+ agents involved, this was one of the biggest non-offical events in Ingress history! Both sides had loads and loads of fun. Here is the Resistance’ point of view.
Planning phase
A few month ago, news reached us that there would be an international Enlightened event in Berlin, purported goal: "Freeing the city from blue influence". There was a series of shards and anomalies going on, after which - whoops, another series of shards. Persepolis hit Berlin with shard #6 “Eggi” staying in Berlin for three weeks (with a short trip to the Baltic Sea). When we remembered we’d have visitors from all over Europe, we had three weeks left. Time to think about our own plans for the weekend.
Berlin has over 15,000 portals and more than a thousand active players. Both factions combined hold at least a thousand P8 throughout the city, 900 of which were blue before Friday evening. Overall, the city is shared 60/40 between RES and ENL.
Needless to say, we as Berlin Resistance could not let the Enlightened have it their way
Planning commenced quickly and there was one definitive goal: Defending against a green invasion is not enough. We want to turn this into our own event!
At that point, we had to ask ourselves 3 basic questions:
When exactly would we start?
How many Enlightened would we face?
How would they plan to turn the city green?
From there on, a lot of planning started and a lot of "what if" questions were thrown around.
Preparation time // Change
We came together the weeks before, farming, discussing. In the days before the event, the city felt much calmer, making it obvious there was something big coming. Our agents did not let that irritate them and multiple spontaneous takedowns of the few green perma-8-farms were carried out, leaving Berlin with a very low green P8 count of about a hundred.
The event
Friday was a hard day to plan for. We didn't know if our green friends would even do anything this evening and in the mostly blue city, there was hardly any fieldart we could do without flipping half the city (not that we hadn’t thought of it). We planned to welcome the Enlightened with an Ingress firework, creating linkstars wherever we’d find enough green. Sadly, the “Allied Forces” did not start playing on Friday. Two areas went on nevertheless, building two linkstars of about 75 links each (screenshots below). At the same time, smurfs roamed the city, painting blue everything in their way while listening for signs of green activity. While we were active in the city, the Enlightened tried to build a field over the city. Blue agents sprawled out of the city to block. Two links went up, but agent @AGENT killed one of the anchors, presumably crushing some green black Illuminator dreams. It was a nice evening.
Saturday
We were still curious about what would happen, how many agents we’d see roaming the city. Berlin was standing with an amazing count of 1500 blue P8, no field over our heads. We spotted a lot of Enlightened agents moving quietly through the city, but nothing happened.
When green agents started gathering near Brandenburger Tor (greetings again from @zorig!), Blue Berlin had to wake up. At noon, Enlightened agents started popping up all over the city. Most of our agents slowly started to head out into the streets, although not all of them were awake or available yet.
A lot of chaos on the intel screens started, as lone wolves began following the enlightened groups. Slowly, blue teams started gathering. As the event progressed, it became clear that the greens were mostly going around in groups of more than a dozen people, probably doing missions. As we knew the sight of bigger green troops wandering around, this was one of the easiest cases to handle. The center of Berlin really felt like an anomaly site: the touristic center was changing colors like disco lights.
Sadly, our favorite plan for the day did not work out. We had planned some awesome XF field art in form of a huge smiley face. This did not work out, because we would have needed a mostly green canvas to draw on.
Overall, the inner city was more or less equally green and blue. Around 19:00, the ENL started moving towards their afterparty and the city became more and more blue again.
Sunday
Suddendly, the Enlightened started attacking places all over Berlin again. Battles were fought, but this time, no chaos broke out. For the whole day, teams of both factions wandered around the city. This time, the green spread farther than before. We even had to postpone our barbeque for some hours, but we had time for another small groupshot (attached)
Final words
With 550+ agents, this was one of the biggest non-offical events in Ingress history. There was fun, chaos, frustration, drunkness and every other emotion involved in big events. While we coudn’t carry out our specific plans, the primary goal of playing together and keeping the city more blue than green was a success. However, in this very moment, green tourists still go around, tearing down districts of Berlin. We rebuild. We resist.
There is no documentation of all the players involved, but we want to say thank you to our guests from Altenburger Land, Braunschweig, Chemnitz, Dresden, Fortuna, Fürth, Harz, Leipzig, Saarland, Schwerin, Straalsund, Weimar and (at least) two international agents,@achran and @yogibear78 from Brno.
