SitRep for Operation ONYXPALOOZA
SitRep for Operation ONYXPALOOZA
The Colorado Enlightened had a little spare time between chasing shards, winning anomalies, and successful xfac Events planned with the Rocky Mountain Resistance, so that gave our very own Agent tedly Ted Harapat, aka the Mayor of Berthoud, some time to come up with a new style of fielding plan.
The conversation started with Agent Naugrim7 and Ted talking about doing a special field Op (as CoEn has been there and done that with BAFs, multi-layers, winning connected cells, etc.). This Op would be different. As the discussion continued and others were brought in, it was filled with, “Well, let’s do this”, “Wait, I can one-up that”, “If we use ADAs, we can double the total MUs”... until the idea was completely hatched.
The final objective of the plan? Starting very late in the evening (11 pm), two teams of Colorado Enlightened Agents would throw multiple 200k’ish MU fields, using portals in or near 3 “cities” (it is Colorado): one with a fixed and somewhat inaccessible anchor point, one with 15 portals lined up for layers, and a third with several portals that could be used to establish the layered fields, then ADA’d and recaptured, to be used again, one hour or more later, until each Agent involved (and awake) hit 4 million total MU, thereby achieving Onyx Illuminator badges for as many Agents as could show up in one night.
Agent Captaindave8 put the final icing on the cake with the perfect name for the Op: Operation ‘Onyxpalooza’ was born. (Total planning time: less than 24 hrs.)
Ted was concerned about key farming, as he was hoping to get 25-30 Agents their badges. The op would require a minimum of 30 keys for each of the 15 portals in Estes Park, plus another 60 for the single portal in Livermore, as well as keys for rails to help protect the lanes.
Ted worries too much.
Agents spyrogyra and Naugrim7 farmed 190 keys. Agents Xynyx, YKantBobReed, and whamfan69 all farmed Estes for keys… Dean Nicholson oufaninco and Kirsten Nicholson warana (just passing through Estes, and knowing they would not be able to partake in the MU smorgasbord) collected 200 keys, themselves. Heidi Hoopes MeerD and her 3 Ingress-playing children, as well as DueceMagilicuty, farmed Eagle's Nest (our single, critical portal in Livermore) for keys, and several other participating Agents added their keys for the portals being used, until we had over 600 keys collected in less than 2 days.
The word spread through private channels as trusted Agents scrambled to join the Op. Additional link-breakers and Intel help were added, including a few veterans, both of whom have been Colorado Ingress Award Winners and already had their Onyx badges, on the Estes team Paltiel K trihga and Dan Edwards Wizrd. Co-coordinators P3terPan and Captaindave8 supervised the Wiggins team, with Agent Xynyx trying his best to learn the art.
A seasoned veteran Intel Operator from our shard shenanigans (his first Operating work), Jim Johnson CoYahoo volunteered for Intel again. Just as with the shard, he was exceptional and so on-top-of-things that, when the time came for execution, the plan went flawlessly.
As go-time approached, Thursday evening, and Ted was meticulously poring over all the worst-case scenarios, Agents began to drive to the small town of Wiggins, Colorado (Pop. 900). 26 Enlightened Agents wound up in Wiggins that night, and, as expected, the local authorities took notice of the large gathering of geeks, wandering around in packs, staring at their phones, and hanging out well past what should have been their bedtimes. Much to our pleasure, however, the Sheriff was amused by the explanation, and even “escorted” one of the teams of Agents around for a while.
Blocking links were taken out by Dean and Kirsten, while I Scott Jacobs PonderingChimp was able to contribute to the Op by taking out the final blockers in Wellington and Ft. Collins. Within minutes of the blockers going down, guide rails went up as the Estes team filled in the 15 portals and linked them to Livermore (only, mind you… o.O). By 11:30 pm, the first fields were being thrown, netting 180-190k MU for each. We would finish the Op with ~90 million MU gained, not the 100 million MU Ted was hoping for. Maths. Damn you!
The fields flew, the MUs accumulated, and the SBULAs and ADAs found their true purpose in the game, and Agent after Agent began to collect their new Onyx Illuminator badges. The Op took a little longer than expected, continuing to the wee hours of Friday morning… and everyone got home safely. When all was said and done, there were some amazing totals and successful results:
484 fields, averaging 187,000 MU each
90 million MU created (and, largely, destroyed)
517 links, using 600+ collected keys
32 SoftBank Ultra Link Amps used
32 ADA Refractors used
A few Ingress myths were also debunked with this Op:
1. Planning Ops is hard.
2. Earning the Onyx Illuminator badge is hard.
3. Key Farming is hard.
