Inspired by a Legend
The story of Operation Emerald Island – how just five agents covered most of the island nation of Sri Lanka in green fields back in November 2013 – is familiar to every Sri Lankan Enlightened agent. Since then, we dreamt about the next Emerald Island, to surpass that legendary operation. However, the odds against us were not good; the portal density is much higher now, the number of agents in both factions had grown dramatically, and consequently the chances of a blocking link that would ruin the entire plan was also higher.
Preparing for an Ambitious Plan
We made several plans over more than an year, only to abandon them as new obstacles stood in our way. Finally in July, we finalized an ambitious plan that we knew would be the best shot we would get at this for a long time to come. We needed keys from all corners of the island, so there was a lot of travelling to be done. Teams were dispatched to farm keys soon after the plan was finalized, and continued on until days before the planned execution.
By 14th August noon, the key transfers were complete and agents started leaving for their positions. The operation was scheduled for dawn next day, with the secondary objective of getting as many fields as possible for the 2.30am checkpoint.
Agents began clearing blockers on the Western part of the country in the evening. This was the area with the most active agents in both factions, so teams had a hectic time travelling from place to place as new blockers sprang up constantly. A late blocker threatened to derail the whole plan less than 2 hours before kickoff, but veteran agent @SLpooh rode to the rescue and the situation was finally under control.
Execution
The operation started at 1.00am, as teams from Central and Western parts of the country cleared the last remaining blockers. The base links for the Northern phase was established around 1.30am, and the Southern phase followed shortly after. The Jaffna team, which had travelled the farthest to the Northern corner of the country, completed the first field set at 2.20am.
The Southern phase started with their first field set by 2.30am, and the rest of the Northern fields were underway. The Southern teams held off for a while as agents @A300F and @jc1992 rushed in to break the last remaining blockers preventing their fields. The Northern phase was completed by the time they restarted. The Southern teams continued to make three more field sets, with the last field being completed just after 4.00am covering the South Western part of the island.
In just over three hours, Operation Emerald Island 2 was complete. We had covered almost 90% of the country, with an MU count that far exceeded our estimates; 165 million! This was the biggest Ingress operation carried out to date in Sri Lanka, in terms of MU, area covered, and number of fields.
Now, we have a new story to tell.
