8.8.15 Operation First Maraud - Sitrep

I couldn't be more proud of what happened in Ingress and Ingress Denver Resistance  world last night. In the approximately 75 days I've been playing this silly, amazing game, I've gotten to meet some fantastic people. Most especially Stanford Gnagy (iKilledmyTV) and Eric Buckland (0eric0), who took the time to show me the ins-and-outs of throwing fairly small, but mighty MU layered urban fields by myself or with just a couple people.

I've been throwing these kinds of fields with some regularity now in Foxtrot 5 and 6 whenever I felt like our cell scores needed it, but it is demanding doing it all the time by myself. I'd been kicking around the idea of getting more agents trained in how to throw these kinds of fields so I wasn't the only one doing it, and that's how The Midnight Marauders came to be. I want it to be a highly-mobile team, who can look at the intel map, see lanes, and just go for it, without any big planning workup. The group is a collection of my fellow players I’ve gotten to know who have expressed interest in this kind of fielding, and last night was our first group “maraud.”

0eric0 was the mastermind behind the operation, he came to us on Thursday evening with a rough sketch of a multi-layered and double-spined field, running from a solo anchor point in Waterton Canyon, to another anchor off Sheridan and Morrison Rd, first spine through downtown Golden, then again anchored in Golden and running back out to the Morrison Rd spine (essentially two layered fields nested together). I took one look, and said “let’s do it Friday night!”

We challenged ourselves to do this field with little planning, as that is the Marauder’s purpose. There wasn’t any weeks of pre-op spreadsheets, working out throw orders, or even someone running dispatch. Just us, out in the field, using Zello, and 0Eric0’s mobile intel station in his car and our phones. So in less than 24 hours after coming up with the idea, 0Eric0, iKilledmyTV, and I were out key farming, and had assembled the Marauders for a 12am start point to hit 4am CP.

Key farming went fairly smoothly, with one exception. iKilledmyTV tried to farm the Morrison spine stealthy in the early afternoon, but there was some sort of bungled ENL fielding operation going on and when he dropped keys to get more keys, they were stolen from underneath him and then he was followed around for a bit by Tordenaever. I was able to come through Morrison a couple hours later and kill the ENL fielding op (they’d gotten a spine up, but then for some reason hadn’t finished the job) and get keys, and iKilledmyTV  and Joshua Morain  (Schrdngrhepcat) also were able to cruise through later. 0Eric0, iKilledmyTV, Jadyndragon, and I hiked out to our portal in Waterton Canyon in the early evening and despite getting eaten alive by mosquitos, were successfully able to get the many, many keys we needed. Golden was farmed quickly by iKilledmyTV  and I an hour before the meet up point.

At our meet up point, we split up the 9-agent group into 4 teams. Since Tyrenny Hidy (TnyPirate) and Ryan Cash (jackrock) are my L7 and L6 smurflings, we made sure to pair them with our veteran agents so things could come down quickly, but that they’d still get AP and experience a fielding op firsthand. iKilledmyTV, Amber Feldman (lelneria), and TnyPirate took on Golden, Schrdngr took on the south end, Seditia, jackrock, and myself took the northeast and Morrison Rd. 0Eric0 and Jadyndragon were our flex team, first clearing out blockers on the west side then as the other teams were getting the spines set, they worked on hunting down the tiny blockers that had gone under the radar.

Last night was a perfect night to work this op, there was very little ENL activity at all. We did have to go through about 30 jarvis to clear out blue blockers, and we apologize if we killed something of yours. The only trouble we ran into was that our Golden anchor turned out to be this portal that was in a small, dark woods with a ditch/creek running through it and a steep hill, only accessible by going through an apartment building’s parking garage, out through a small door (seriously, it was like going to Narnia), then clambering up the hill in the dark. It was bordered by the freeway, so you couldn’t get to it from the other side. For mysterious GPS reasons, iKilledmyTV and I didn’t have to go too far into the woods to get in range of it when we were key farming there the first time, but when Lelneria, TnyPirate, and he on the second trip to throw to Morrison got out there, they had to clamber way back into the woods to get in range (hence the dark woods selfie). Brave, brave agents!

Our only other problem was a small field inside of Colorado Mills Mall, which was closed being that it was 2am. 0Eric0 and Jadyndragon managed to clear it by getting as close as possible from the outside, and then splash bursting out to it with L8s till it was neutralized. Good work, guys!

We started throwing the field around 3:15am, starting with the Golden crew throwing from each Golden portal down to Waterton, then myself and jackrock at the Morrison anchor throwing to the Golden portals. Then jackrock and I ran the Morrison spine, throwing to Waterton, and the Golden crew throwing back to us from the Golden anchor (in the dark woods) to finish off the fields. We did realize that we’d bungled a couple of the keys and so weren’t able to throw two layers, but other than that it went smoothly and the whole thing was up at 3:58am, just in time for 4am CP! We couldn’t have planned that any better!

Our total MU count at 4am CP was 34 Layers for 4,651,615 MU, and after we met back up, Schrdngr decided to go finish one of the layers that we messed up, so the final count was 35 layers at 4,785,331 MU. Our Foxtrot 5 cell score jumped from 51k/41k ENL to 814k/49k RES.

The field came down from the Waterton Canyon end, ekrispy hiked out there at 6:15am and got it. However, our hero of the story, and the hepest hepcat of them all, Schrdngr, went back out to Waterton at 8am, killed the few blockers ENL and a RES had put up, and rethrew part of the field for another 1,134,090 MU that hit the 9am CP, bringing our grand total for the night up to 5,919,421 MU. Bger killed it 2 minutes after CP from Morrison, and then thoroughly enjoyed the number of AXAs Seditia and Schrdngr put into our Morrison Rd spine, so much enjoyment that he gave up after a bit and drove out to Golden and killed it from the anchor there.

Several folks got various Illuminator badges and their biggest fields ever, TnyPirate got her bronze Engineer, I got my gold Explorer and 200k away from Onyx Illuminator, and there was a heck of a lot of AP earned for everyone! We are fairly sure this is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, urban fields thrown in the Denver metro area ever. The fact that we did it with a small team, little planning, and hardly any hitches makes me so proud. Also seeing my fellow agents being jubilant about a successful op and get so excited about fielding in the future is the best feeling ever, I’m still grinning from ear to ear.

You’ll be seeing more of us, Denver. Also, if you're interested in joining the crew, shoot me a message!
