Operation U of U
College rivalries are known for being intense, especially here in Utah. Ingress inter-college rivalries take that to a whole new level. However, even bitter rivals can set aside their differences and come together to have fun and make something beautiful.
PRE-OP
On July 15th, goblinjimmy (ENL) and Tenshi24 (RES) had a conversation about doing an x-fac art event on the University of Utah campus. When goblinjimmy approached us about the idea, several people jumped at the opportunity. As he put it, “I'm picturing something like...we get together, forget the fact that we are archenemies, do something super cool, take some screen shots, and then run back to our bunkers to plan our next attack against the people we just had fun with.” Within a week, members of both factions joined a cross-faction Hangout to begin planning.
Between good-natured jabs at each other, Bortran (RES) created a beautiful sketch of a half-blue, half-green U that would spread across almost half of campus. kellyrenee77 (ENL) created a survey to help us select a date. A few days later, we had our target set: Friday, August 14th.
DAY OF OP
After weeks of gathering keys, the day finally arrived. Resistance agents moronisghost, Tenshi24, IIIIII, FattyStamos, and LdHoggar met with Enlightened agents goblinjimmy, NonchalantNewt, TumultuousTuna, heliconmunchkin, kellyrenee77, bzen, and gingergamergal at the Marriott Library in the center of campus to exchange keys and go over strategy. Because certain areas of campus are primarily owned by one faction, we split into two cross-faction teams to wipe out campus and create our U. For the next two hours, we laughed, played, and worked together with only minor hiccups impeding progress.
POST OP
By the time we finished, we were sweaty and tired, but pleased with our efforts. Our Intel screenshots captured our hard work while we snapped photos of us together and shared a few more laughs. When we went our separate ways, we all left with smiles on our faces and a good memory to enjoy. Our art survived the weekend and we’re attempting to keep it up for the next week until school begins.
