Operation: Semicolon
First a few words from Nik:
“This event is inspired by the battle that agent @Taterbug is currently fighting. Her battle has been echoed amongst hundreds of other agents via private posts and messages to the Moore family. This is a battle that most fight internally and it's time to break the stigma that depression and suicide carry with them. This event is by no means about one agent, but about one fight.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 3000 people on average commit suicide daily. In addition, for every person who commits suicide, 20 or more others attempt to end their lives.
About one million people die by suicide each year (WHO). World Suicide Prevention Day, which first started in 2003, is recognized annually on Sept. 10. World Suicide Prevention Day aims to:
1. Raise awareness that suicide is preventable
2. Improve education about suicide
3. Spread information about suicide awareness
4. Decrease stigmatization regarding suicide
This is an Xfaction event, as it affects everyone from every walk of life. What we would like to see is field art, something in dedication to life, like the semi-colon (a globally recognized symbol for the fight against suicide). Also, take the time to read about suicide and depression in the links below, learn the signs and see if there is anyone you know that maybe needing your hand to hold through their dark times, or your shoulder to lean on. Chances are you know or have known such a person. Your actions may serve to help remind them that their story isn’t over yet. This event is scheduled to take place over Suicide Prevention Week to encompass the day mentioned above as well.
When you complete your field art be sure to screenshot it, either upload it to the event, and/or publicly post it with the hashtags: #OpSemiColon #TaterBugLove
