    David Bucknall actually, it was a shit glider with a 20 degree Glide slope.

    That's about the same as someone in a wingsuit

    It did the job but it was far from an "awesome glider" (which was the statement I was replying to)

    The shuttle is an incredible piece of kit but I don't think I've ever heard any of the pilots laud it's in-atmosphere performance... Flying brick is more often the comment.

    Soooo... Strap two J79 engines on it and it'll be an F-4 Phantom?

    Maybe I should have said "Awesome bit of kit, that was not a plane". And, as a flying brick, kudos to those who managed to get it down from space to a small strip of runway. I remember watching the first and the last touchdowns live, and many in between. Even on the back of a plane, it looked cool.
