ReplyDeleteI liked the old Salisbury steak or was it just steak. The dehydrated cardboard meat patty. Versatile as a source of nutrition and construction.
ReplyDeleteThe spaghetti and meatballs we got was exactly like chef boyardee. Not that it was that good, but better than most of the others!

These didn't come along until I was just about out. C-Rations and K-Rations were what we had. Some were alright, but some were pretty nasty. The MRE's seemed like a pretty good upgrade at the time.

ReplyDeleteSpaghetti with crushed up crackers,cheese spread and hotsauce. Dessert was a track bar with peanut butter.
ReplyDeleteHam omelette was the most memorable for me. In a very bad way. Just imagine an omelette made to have an unrefrigerated shelf life of 10 years. When I started in the Army I could choke down a few of them but by the end all of them made me nauseated.

ReplyDeleteDehydrated Beef Patty was always one of my favorites. I kinda miss the days when you could eat em crunchy. Everything in it... crunchy.... in later years I came to love the Chicken and rice. But had to use the Tabasco and crackers and eat it like a paste rather than cooking it.
ReplyDeleteI remember as a kid eating some of my grandfather's c-rations from WW2, the only thing memorable was the chocolate, white with age but still good.

ReplyDeleteThe dehydrated fruit (aka flavored styrofoam) was the best. Also remember being one of few who would eat the dehydrated pork patty.

ReplyDeleteOne deployment in Albania my unit adopted a stray dog. We named it Ham Slice because he was the only one that would eat that meal. The CO eventually smuggled the dog out of country in a flight bag when we pulled out.

ReplyDeleteThis is why I am a member of several troop support groups that send packages regularly to whoever we can.
ReplyDeleteI get very upset knowing our service men and women are forced to eat garbage, especially when it's just to save a dollar.
For those of you who served and are serving, and for those who lost someone who gave the ultimate, thank you.
Chilli Mac stands out for me but that's only due to the heart-burn that was left afterward. I don't have a favorite , but the dehydrated fruit was awesome

ReplyDeleteBack when I first lived at Bagram we kept a list so we could pilfer the fresh boxes. The only thing I remember as a favorite was the cheese spread on crackers. I've done my best to repress living on those for 6 months, but compared to what they served in the chow hall, damn tasty...

ReplyDeleteIn basic (infantry) had c-rats. The ham and eggs were okay. Then I became a cook and never had them again. Also never had an mre.

ReplyDeleteThe vegetarian ones were the best. The snack stuff was better and you got a pasta instead of a chunked and formed patty.

Noooo I ate my share when I was in the Army never again. Also I will be happy if I never see a TRAT. Again if you have a MKT. Cook and stop heating up TRATS. That is was the MKT. Was built for heating up a TRAT. Anyone can do. After all is that not why you went to culinary school? To learn how to cook. It made me so mad to have KP. Duty in the field and all they did was heat up TRATS. Really you need help serving? If I could not do my MOS. The Army would of reclassified me. TRATS. And MRE. On yes it it was the last chow on earth. Guess I will go hungry. Favorite?? Eat a MRE. 3X. A day for 30 days come back from the field for 2 days go back to the field and eat a MRE 3X for another 30 days the tell me your favorite MRE.

ReplyDeleteOfficial one, I swear that I became self propelled. I think that it was franks and beans, leftover from '92.
MY whole thing is that I hate, hate, hate MRE and TRATS. I know others ate them in the Military just like I did. Even after Hurricane Katina Hit Biloxi and FEMA and the Military were handing them out. I refused to eat them as I had my share of them in the Army.. And a bad note when I served 92-95 we did not even have the heaters that come in them now. The only thing that made them ok was the tobacco that was in the package. In Alaska in the winter we had a special MRE. They were all dehydrated just like a LERP as during winter if you were issued the standard MRE. it would of been frozen. So sadly I ate two types of them. As for the TRAT. I don't get it. the MKT is designed to cook in and all our worthless cooks did was heat of TRATS. Really? culinary school the Army sent them to and all they did was boil water for a TRAT. And for my book the worst TRAT was that beefaroni. I could not even eat that garbage with all the tobacco in the world.

ReplyDeleteMmm, I used to live for Ham Slice, put that in the exhaust stack of my M931 and accelerate for a minute or so. Then stick it in between the cardboard crackers with some Tabasco sauce, and have a meal fit for a king! I was an MRE chef extrodinare! And have ranger bar for desert!
